Default Trouble opening rifle

I bought my son a Rossi Youth .243 single shot. First day of shooting we put through 20 rounds and never had a problem. 2nd day of shooting a few weeks later after about the 10th shot the gun would not break open. The lever button would not release the gun to open. It seemed like about 10 min. would go by before it would finally release but that button wouldn't budge then suddenly on another try it would release. Once it opened I could close and open as many times as I wanted. Take another shot then it would lock up again. The pattern seemed to be, Shoot, lock up, wait 10 min, finally open, open and close no problem, Shoot, lock up, and so on and so on. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen? I'm I doing something wrong? Thanks

Did you clean it after the first time you took it out?

I did not clean it after the first 20 rounds.
I do not do my own loading.
The first box of ammo was different than the last 20. This past time we shot 100 grain still but used Winchester.
I have cleaned the best i know how and also put grease in that area. Won't know if that helped untill next time we go out.

We'll see what happens but I do appreciate everyones questions or comments. Thanks
