New gun prices...
Yowza! :jaw:
I priced a new Rem 700 mountain LSS yesterday...$950 (plus tax) Looking at getting my son a new deer rifle, was thinking of a 7mm-08. Not sure I can drop that kind of coin on one now. I almost bought one of these about 6-7 yrs ago....it was almost half what they are now, wish I would have. Any suggestions on something cheaper, but in line with a mountain lss? (or are they all real expensive now?) I honestly haven't kept up with cf rifles in a while. |
Tikka, Weather Vanguard 2, Savage, Browning XBolt. All of them would be cheaper and just as accurate if not more than the 700.

Any of those make something compatible with a mountain rifle (size, weight, etc)?
Obviously if I option down to a non laminates stainless gun, the price goes down...but if it won't break the bank, that is what I really would like to get. The size, fit, and style of the mountain rifle is what I like most. |

After checking the internet the only rifle out there to me that is 100% compatible with the Rem 700 LSS, that would not be a step down would be a Sako 85 grey wolf and there you are going to pay more.

There is one more option the Ruger M77 Hawkeye sporter but there you cannot get the 7mm 08.

suck it up and spend the money, we won't tell your mrs if you don't tell ours, mine finds out how much I spend on rifles and I'll be featured on divorce court.
RR I know, its just painful that's all. I know the gun will last a lifetime, just having a hard time dropping that much on it. Honestly, I had no idea they had jumped that high. He told me that lately most guns go up 5-6% a year minimum. I might check out gunbroker, or the used market a bit first and see what I can find. Thanks guys |
Yeah I am kicking myself for not making more purchases last year...as prices seem to be climbing at a faster pace then what I am use to. But hey, I am with RR on this...I won't tell if you won't. Now to find that Savage Model 10 FCP-K...shoulda bought it last year when I could find it for $725ish...LOL

Ruger laminated stainless Compact in 7mm-08??? |
I'm currently shopping around for a 7mm08 for my son. We've narrowed it down to the Tikka T3 Hunter (don't think we can get in SS in US) and
Browning X Bolt. Ran across this one http://www.gunsinternational.com/BRO...n_id=100208400 |
You wont' go wrong with either choice!
|
I saw a Rem 700 in 243 for under $400 in Wal-Mart the other day...think it was an ADL (had a blind magazine).
|
you can not go wrong with the 700,mine i have 2 in kevlar 223,it will drive a penny @ 100 yards..

I know it is hard to swallow the prices, but actually I don't see how they make them so cheap. A few years back I was discussing the price of rifles with a co-worker (We were working as machinists) and if you look at all the different operations involved and everybody getting a cut it is amazing they are that cheap. The price of high quality steel is at an all time high, quality walnut is getting harder to come by, and the government regulations for pollution makes heat treating and bluing more expensive. The gun goes to a wholesaler, to a factory representitve dealer to a dealer. Everybody gets a cut. It probably cost s more to ship a gun than other products. I think the thing that put the large companies in trouble was lack of Government contracts for guns and parts.

look at a savage or tikka. Great guns for less. Probably better than any Rem that comes out of todays factory.

here you go. Its the old style mountain rifle (used).....not the ss/laminate (which, imo, the "laminate" seemed to go against the "mountain rifle" set-up anyway...because of the added weight. Anyway, I like these old mountain rifles better and this one was less than $500.00 when I looked at the auction |
btw, the description says that it is in like new condition...I'm tempted to bid on it myself....lol

Just throwing the idea out there but you might want to look into the remington 700 XCR or XCR ii. The XCR is discontinued but is still available in most gunshops chambered for 7mm-08. Plus even though the XCR ii isn't in 7mm-08 it has many other great cartridges. it retails for $1005 but I picked one up new for $769.99 in .270 Win.
|
I would look into a weatherby vanguard. I picked one up online for under $500 new. You can by the rifle and a nikon scope up for what you would pay for the remington 700. Mine groups are ususally between 3/4 and 1 in. For the mony you can't beat them.

I shopped around and got my brand new Savage GCNS Model 11 7mm-08 Wood Stock Bolt-Action for around $600.00,priced the Light Weight Hunter for a little over $600.00 this year....then You have the price of rings and a good scope!
Keep checking around and hopefully You'll find one at a resonable price...or as most stated save up and get what You want or You'll always wish You had that 1 certain Rifle! |
Browning 280
I have a Browning A-Bolt II Hunter in a 280 cal. and I love it. Great deer hunting rifle minus all that shoulder punch. shells are reasonably priced as well.
