Default .35 Remington questions

I have a Remington 760 Gamemaster in .35 Rem, i was wondering:

1: Whats the maximum range for target shooting?

2: Whats the maximum range to cleanly kill a deer with the .35?
(my longest shot was 100 yards with it)

3: Can it kill an elk? and whats the longest shot you would take at a elk with the .35?

4: whats a good scope for under $50 for the Gamemaster in .35?
(currently i just have open sights)

Keep the gun with open sights.

A $50 scope is at best for a .22 rimfire.

That's what it was built for...............close cover gun (100 yards if fine for anything).

Hornady's leverevolution ammo allow you to streach that out a bit (150 yards - without a scope) !

$50 scope on a high powered rifle ???

i took a deer at 125yds. with mine. i would say 150yds or less for elk using the 220gr.F.P. or the 200 R.N. i would spend the $50 on peep sights.

As others have said, $50 is not going to buy much of a scope. Keep your eyes open for a quality used scope especially a low power or fixed power one. If you are willing to stretch your budget a bit you might do well. I have 2 * 7 Redfield ($150 new - made by Leupold) that you might consider especially if you can get it used or from a floor sample.

Thats a nice gun.Because it has a clip magazine you can shoot spire points in it {other than leverlotions}. You'll have to hand load or find someone to hand load for you you. With spire points you have 200 yd. deer rifle,IMO i dont think you could push it much farther. As far as elk i would say to keep it 100yds. and less. Put a 4x scope on it and go hunting with it.

Thanks i will keep it with open sights for now, i found a used bushnell trophy scope (3-9) that i might buy, i mainly want the scope for target shooting.

I probably won't hunt elk with it because i live and hunt in Maine.
and 150 yards is the longest shot i can even get around here.

My brother uses a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. Has for decades. It is a darned good round for deer sized game, but for all practical purposes the cartridge is more or less unheard of down this way. Ammo is relativley difficult to find. He and I hunt woods (hardwood bottoms and mature planted pines) where shots are seldom past 75 yards, and certainly never in the 150 yards range. I'd say this cartridge will do fine for such hunting.

As far as a $50 scope? Trust me on this .... don't waste your $$. Save up and take a look at a quality compact in say 1.5-6x32 to 40 mm. On a tight budget, the Bushnell Elite would be a good choice.

if you put a nice scope on it....unless extremely experienced, ya shouldnt go out of 100 yards with iron sights. if you could get a 4 inch group after 6-10 shots, then maybe yer good fer 150, if yer 4" on that, then maybe you can do 200.

my 2011 deer was shot at 100+ yards with iron sights
I recently bought a see through scope mount for it and put a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 on it

1: Whats the maximum range for target shooting? How biga boy are ya? Max range is limited only by how good a shot you are. It won't punch paper at 500yds like your 7mag but it will STILL punch paper at 500yds!

2: Whats the maximum range to cleanly kill a deer with the .35?
(my longest shot was 100 yards with it)"power wise" it could kill a whitetail under "perfect conditions" at 400yds. But there are WAY to many variables and "what if's" to list for that stunt. With todays ammo and under good conditions the 35 will cleanly whack a whitetail at 250yds. (Assuming you know YOUR part first!)

3: Can it kill an elk? and whats the longest shot you would take at a elk with the .35?In it's century plus of life the ol 35 has killed EVERY species of beast on the planet. (Again, perfect conditions and in some cases I'm sure Lady Luck was smiling large!) But with the better ammo and the proverbial "perfect broadside or slightly quartering away" shot there's NO reason it won't smoke a wapiti at 200yds!

4: whats a good scope for under $50 for the Gamemaster in .35?
(currently i just have open sights)For $50 I hope you are talking about a STEAL of a deal on a decent used scope. NOBODY builds anything new worth having on a big game gun for $50! Save another hundred and stick a decent lil ol 2x7 Redfield on it.
Ammo wise, there are two loads that maximize the 35 and "bring it into the 2010s". Of course the 200grn Leverevolution from Hornady. For most deer hunting it's the ticket and easy to get. Now if you want to turn your ol 35 into a MAX KILLER then checkout the FULL THROTTLE fodder from Buffalo Bore: http://www.buffalobore.com/index.php...t_detail&p=166 Nary a critter inside of 250yds will be able to take this kind of punishment (as usual, assuming you do YOUR part and put the bullet where it's supposed to go).

It aint pretty, fast or flashy but like most other mid and big bore cals it doesn't need huge cases, snazzy bullets nor NASA speed to kill. It does what a big game cal is supposed to do, put a hole ALL the way through whatever you are wantin it to!
