I' ve got a chance to pick up one of the 2 following rifles:
Remington model 700 BDL 7mm mag with Redfield 3x9 scope, 3 boxes of ammo - Mint!!!!!!
Remington Mountain Rifle 7mm Mauser Leupold 3x9 scope, 6 boxes of ammo - Mint!!!!!
I' m looking for a good all around cartridge. I know what the 7mm mag will do but don' t know anything about the 7mm Mauser. I' ll be using this mainly for deer, but will also moose, and elk hunt with it. I' m basically a bow hunter but I need to have just 1 rifle. Sold all mine a few years ago and want to kick myself.

The 7x57 Mauser is a good step down in power from any of the 7mm mags. It' s a great cartridge and plenty for whitetail, but since you mentioned moose I' d go with the 7mm mag.
W.D. Bell killed quite a few elephants with the little 7x57, but he was shooting solids to the brain. I sometimes wonder how many he wounded along the way but didn' t write about.

Either rifle shooting 175 grain bullets will do the job well. If you have the ability to place your shot well go with the much lighter and much milder recoiling 7x57.

It is tough to beat a 7mm mag for a one-rifle hunter. However, the 7mm Mauser has killed more game of all sizes and species than all the 7mm mags put together, including elephant. Hardly kicks at all, either.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. The 7 mm mag was sold this morning
. The guy wth the 7 mm Mauser wants to trade me for a shotgun I don' t use much. I' ll be shooting a lot more deer than moose with the gun.

I was going to tell you that I prefer the 7 X 57 Mauser, but was also going to advise you to go with the 7mm Mag.
as long as only the 7 x 57 is now available I' d tell you to jump on it! It is a marvelously versatile round (has it' s limitations) but I think you' ll be pleased with it' s performance on whitetails...and with 175 grainers you can certainly take the bigger game mentioned if you do your job with properly constructed bullets. Good luck with your new acquisition!
