There' s not enough PERFORMANCE difference, for deer, between a .270 Win., .280 Rem, .30/' 06, 7mm Rem. Mag., or any of the WSM' s, to recommend one over the other!! The only advantage to the short-shorts is the fact that you can put them in a shorter, lighter action & thus, rifle!

Ok, maybe strickly for deer. But deer get big some places and .30 cal bullet is nice. Also, 30-06 allows you to shoot between 110 and 220 grain bullets something no 7mm can do. Plus ammo is dirt cheap because it is the most popular caliber. Sometimes on sale for $10 a box.

Deer don' t get any bigger than where I hunt in alberta and saskatchewan. There is no deer that can' t cleanly be taken with the 25-06,7mm-08 or similar 7mm or smaller bullet. The .308" 110 to 130gr or 200gr or heavier bullets are totally unnecessary for big game.In .308" caliber the 150 to 180gr are by far the most commonly used bullets and are all that is necessary for any big game.In 7mm the 140 to 160gr bullets will serve for all big game hunting.

Both are a bit on the heavy side for deer, but both will work just fine. If you don' t mind the more expensive (and harder to find) ammo, the 7mm WSM would be nice. If you want to combine the two rounds into one, you pretty much come up with a .280 Rem. Hmmmmm..........
