Deer rifle around $300

I am trying to help a friend buy a first deer gun. He just want to spend around $300. I don' t know much about rifle either. I shoot a 308. So I would like some suggestions from all of you. The regulation required a minimum of .240. Thanks.

I have heard that savage rifle are really nice and i think you can get them for 350 with a scope. I also know that NEF/H&R has single shot handi-rifles for 199. I just bought a NEF in .243 and i like it a lot.

Go to gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com. You can find some good deals on used guns that would be a heck of a lot better than buying a cheap new gun.

You can also get shafted on the auction sights too. There is nothing wrong with some of the " cheap new guns" . Savages are great, I have three of them and they all perform flawlessly, but you won' t generally find them for $300 unless used. The H&R/NEF single shot rifles are good. No frills, utilitarian, accurate and reliable. Not much more you can ask out of a rifle.

Tell you friend to save up a few more dollars and get a new Savage. It will shoot with the best of them. As a matter of fact it is considered one of the top out-of-the-box guns for accuracy. Inexpensive, but in no way " junk" .

For a good cheap deer rifle you can not go wrong with the NEF' s they are a practical rifle for the money minded hunter.I have 1 in 25-06 rem,I bought it last year. Then I found out you can get diffret barrles for it AND THEY ARE CHEAP compared to T/C.You just have to send it back to the factory for fitting.I now have 4 barles for it(450 marlin,22-250 Bull,20 ga.,and 280 rem 26" )and I think I' m in to it around $600.00.The gun cost about 250.00 and it will kill deer out to 500 yrds.BBJ

Try going to a gun show. Look at the guns closely. If they are well maintained, clean, they will probably be okay and not dysfunctional in any way.

It' s going to be tough finding a new rifle for 300.00 simply because a decent scope and rings/bases are going to run the price tag up another 200.00 or more.

You might find a Remington ADL for around that. They have iron sights and don' t have to have a scope.

The NEF' s come with bases, all you have to do is buy rings(weaver). So let' s break it down.
1.NEF Rifle(calber of choice)say 30-06 $200.00
2.Weaver rings $10.00
3.Simmons 1.5-4.5 White tail classic $80.00
Total cost $290.00

savage rifles are great and very accurate rifles but if you want a scope it' s going to be a bit higher than $300.00 in fact , a basic savage rifle with iron sites is going to be closer to $400.00 than 300.00

the new england , and h&r single shot' s would be closer to what you' de want to spend and they are also great guns , give' em a try .:D:D

if the goal is $300 you might want to look for used guns with iron sights. There' s no law that says you need a scope. I bought a used .270, Remington 700 the other day for $295...and it shoots great.

I wouldn' t worry about the barrel being shot out on a deer rifle.....but on a varmint rifle maybe.

There' s also military ' 98 mausers for about $100 that shoot fine and the 8mm mauser is a good cartridge.

Personally I think the best advise I' ve heard is to save your money, borrow a gun a couple years, add a few hundred bucks and then buy a fine gun!
