A mossberg 500 is a good deal. Great quality and a great price. You can get a combo smoothbore barrell and rifled slug barrell ordered at wally world for around 300 dollars.

A 30-30 marlin or winchester is under 300 dollars. Not a real bad starter rifle, but the NEF' s are a better deal. Cheaper and you can get a wider variety of calibers. Some of them come with iron sights (the 243 and 30-30 model).

I bought a NEF ultra in .35 Whelen for $275.00 used, with a 3-9 kassar scope. I don' t know much about this brand of scope but it seems to be O.K. Being that .35 Whelen rifles are tough to find I could not pass it buy.

Also have NEF .223 with a Simmons scope that shoots quarter sized groups at a 100yds all day long.:D
