.300 Win. Mag. Ideal finished rifle weight...
Just looking for opinions on this.....
If you were building an "all around" North American rifle in .300 Win. Mag., what would you folks like the UNSCOPED rifle to weigh? Consider a combination of deer hunting out of a box stand. Still hunting throught timber for deer, or elk. ect. Not really expecting to be climbing up and down mountains where an ultra lightweight rifle would be needed. I'm in the very last stages of my Hill Country Rifle being finished, and they recently completed a setup just like mine that wound up tipping the scales at 7lbs. 10oz. unscoped with no sling or ammo. Would you folks prefer "your" .300 Winny to be lighter? Heavier? All opinions welcomed......... |
Mine is a Ruger #1 B and it's no lightweight. I believe it's about 8.25 lbs. naked.

10# totally finished would be nice, so maybe 8.75# rifle alone...

Thanks guys,
Keep the opinions coming! I really thought I was going to get a "DANG that's going to be a heavy rifle to carry around"!!! Sounds like mine will be a shade lighter than either of the ones listed so far. Thanks for the input |
An all around rifle for me would have a graphite composite stock and a medium sporter barrel. 300 mag I would want a 24-26" barrel. Hopefully you would be able to have that bare around 8-9lbs.
I really would not want any magnum caliber under 8 lbs. 7.5lbs maybe. Don't want to loose accuracy or develope flinches through heavy recoil. |
I don't think any of mine are under 10lbs set up ready to hunt...

My Sako A7 in 7MM RM is 6.9 lbs
My X-Bolt in .338WM is 6 lbs 13 oz. No mountains ??? |
Mine is a 'full up' Sendero and probably goes around 11.5 lb ready to hunt with, certainly not light but I am used to carrying it and its very comfortable to shoot. If I were to go light/ultra light I'd be looking at 7 lbs without a scope , mounts, rings, strap, ammo etc. I just wouldn't go out and shoot off a couple of boxes of ammo like I can do with my Sendero.
As a general rule elk hunting involves at least some mountains...not always. |
