If you like the Marlins you can look around and find "off brand" versions even cheaper than the 336. The first deer rifle I ever owned, and still own today is a Marlin 30A in 30-30. Basically the same gun just a little different stock. I've seen used versions of these in great shape for less than $300.00.

I agree the Marlin 336 is the way to go. I have found the most suitable scope / mount combination to be a Leupold 2.5x compact set in low Weaver rings with Weaver Bases. This combination only adds 6 ounces to the rifle!
