30/30 input needed

I am looking to get a 30/30.

my options are

mossberg- new
winchester - used
henry-used
Marlin-used

I can get the mossberg new for 400, and the rest would be a used price. So I need pro's and con's so I can make a choice.

thanks

I have had my marlin 336 since the early 90s, and cant tell you how many rounds have gone thru it. I have no experience with the others. Im told the winchesters are more labor intensive to take apart for cleaning, and Im sure the others would be that way too. Handle them all and see what fits. IMO, unless you have less then good eye sight, stick to iron sights, and dont mount a scope. Ive shot mine with and without a scope, and it handles much nicer without the added weight on top.

IMO the two best choices are Winchester and Marlin. The Marlin has side eject, so it is easier to mount a scope or holographic sight if you wish. The Marlin 336 as a reputation of good accuracy for a lever action with a tubular magazine and barrel band on the stock forearm. With any firearm, take a close look at the rifling and especially the crown.

Either the winchester or marlin. The others are new and cheaply made. The marlins the most accurate but the winny is close. If you want a scoped gun go marlin but if u wanna iron sighted brush gun go winchester. My 2cents worth

I have shot and used both the Marlin and the Winchester.. I like the Marlin much better. The biggest draw back from the Marlin is it is heavier to carry. It does shoot better than the Winchester due to the micro grove rifleing.. I also have a tip-off scope mounted on mine and I love the set up..

I've seen Marlins very close to the $400 price brand new. Look around. Bass Pro has the 336W on line for $429 right now......I would go that route.

Marlin is by far the best choice in my opinion. I have used all of the above rifles and the Marlin Rules, accuracy and dependability.:s2:

I'd also suggest the Marlin.

Proud owner of a Marlin 336C in .35 Remington.

Iron sights only, because thats what it's for IMO ...................heavy cover, short range, quick shooting.

halfbakedi420 06-06-2011 03:48 PM

if it is lever action, i'd go i the henry.

GRIZZLYMAN 06-06-2011 05:46 PM

I've owned a couple of Marlin 336s, and still have one of them circa 1971. I will always have a Marlin in my collection. Nothing against Winchester or the others, I just stopped when I found what I wanted.

Thanks everyone. In fact dick's sporting goods has the marlin now for 399.00. I am thinking that is the way to go.

IMO 336 all the way!

WNYhunter 06-09-2011 05:26 AM

how about this..... new versus old?

I nice new shiny one that I can drag through the bruch,, lol or a proven, scratched up proven one.

Like I said, I can buy a brand new marlin for 400.00. Good price but are these new ones built to last so my grandkids can hunt with it?

IMHO......Yes!

Marlin 336 I got one with a scope best 30-30 I ever owned.

WVCritter 06-09-2011 06:23 PM

I have a Marlin 336C that I bought new back in 1973 on sale for around $100 and I still own it today. I think the newer 336's with the safety is the way to go.

emtrescue6 06-10-2011 05:11 PM

Marlin...I have 5 336's (2x 30-30, 44 Mag, 35 Rem and 32 Spec)...all shoot and handle well and are more accurate than the 2 Winny 94's I have in 30-30. The Marlins are a hair heavier, but that also helps tame recoil as little.

I'd go that way too!

A used one is a fine gun as well!

Camosteel 06-19-2011 02:57 PM

If you like the Marlins you can look around and find "off brand" versions even cheaper than the 336. The first deer rifle I ever owned, and still own today is a Marlin 30A in 30-30. Basically the same gun just a little different stock. I've seen used versions of these in great shape for less than $300.00.

RMcL 06-20-2011 01:05 PM

I agree the Marlin 336 is the way to go. I have found the most suitable scope / mount combination to be a Leupold 2.5x compact set in low Weaver rings with Weaver Bases. This combination only adds 6 ounces to the rifle!

garett12 06-20-2011 01:27 PM

Id say Marlin also.
