I wouldn' t buy a new scope quite yet. It may be the gun/ammo combination. Check all of the screws and mounts and make sure they are tight and in the right spot. Buy a couple different brands of ammo, and then go test groups. Certain guns just don' t like certain types of ammo. A friend of mine had a similar problem with a Win. Model 70 300 Win Mag. It has a BSA 3-9x40 on it. He couldn' t hit the broadside of a barn with it. Upon closer inspection, We noticed that one screw was loose, we tightned it up and it hasn' t lost it zero since. ALWAYS start with the least expensive solution. A couple boxes of ammo and a tube of lock-tite cost a lot less than a $300 scope. Then you can spend more money on ammo, which means more practice and more fun.

One other thing you may want to try........ Clean the crap out of the barrel! There may be decades of copper in the barrel since a good many people don' t clean them well enough. Hoppe' s #9 is great for powder, but not worth a hoot for copper no matter how many times you scrub it. And that was the mainstay for many years.

Sorry friend but the Remington Auto is known for bad patterns....some shoot great....some don' t.....find a friend that has good groups with another scope and add it to your gun.....you' ll save a bundle!!pay him for his inconvenience.....

I have shot a dozen 7400 Rems. None shot worse than 2 1/2 inches. They can be a little touchy on ammo though.

I' ve haven' t fired as many of the 7400' s as I have the older 742' s. But I' ve fired a number of 742' s that would have had to got very lucky to break the 6" mark. Many of them would barely stay in a milk jug at 100 yards. You might try a different load and get better results or it could just be the rifle. Has anyone else fired the rifle for accuracy? You might let someone you know is a solid bench rest shooter try the rifle.

I gete accused of being so cheap I squeak when I walk, but I have had a lot of luck with both Simmons and BSA scopes, which are way under $300.

You know I never once thought about the ammo. That would save alot of money on a couple of boxes vs. a $300 dollar scope. I know the gun is not dirty, because I don' t let the sun set on a dirty gun. Thanks you guys, and with that said I' ve got to start a new " Ammo for 7400' s" thread.
