Scopes.................under $300

Need a scope for my remington 7400 I just bought. It had a Dusk & Banner on it and it will only hold 6" patterns. How crappy is that? Anyway, need some suggestions on Scopes. Don' t say Swarovski or Zeiss or Kahles. I am only 19 and work part-time while going to school, so it' s gotta be under $300. I am thinking of the Leupold VX-I, maybe a Nikon. Please give me all the advice you can give. Thanks again and Happy Hunting!!!

Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40. All the scope you' ll ever need, and priced between 175.00 and 199.00 depending on where you get it. Then you' ll have to figure in about 45.00 for new rings if you need them.

I just saw some adds for a new line of " less" expensive leupolds you might want to look at. The scopes still come with the lifetime warranty and are supposed to be around $200 retail.

I quickly read the advertisement, and went to go look at it again, the " new" scope is a redesigned VX-1. The scope is a great scope and well within your price range.

I' m always looking for a good buy.Check out these scopes.
1. Weaver V-series ( around 140.00)
2.Nikon pro staff (130.00-180.00)
3.Sightron SI (150.00-190.00)

These three scopes are great buys and are quality optics.

SD...for the $, a VXII is hard to beat. You can get a 3-9-40 for about $275. Some other options are...Nikon, Bushnell Elite 3200, Weaver or Sightron. All nice scopes.

Question, are you sure the problem is with the scope? Before I spent much money, I' d make sure it' s the scope, not the gun.

I would look at the Leupold VX-II, Nikon Monarch or the Weaver Grand Slam. All great scope for the money.

My vote would be either a Leupold Var X-II or Bushnell Elite 3200. The Elite 3200 is an excellent scope for the money.

Silent,

$300 is a reasonable allocation of funds for a scope for your rifle.

If you are just shooting at the range or deer in the local patch, then probably any of the ones listed thus far will do and do so for far less than $300.

If you plan to leave home and go for the big time, now or in the future, then I' d recommend a Leupold VX-I or VX-II with a good set of mounts.

They all look shiny in the glass display case and they all have one bragging point or another where they' ll claim to be " better" . But when you check among hunters that are going for the out of state hunt, with lost wages, significant costs, and preference points used all on the line -- you will find Leupold comes in commonly as the minimum allowable AND as the most commonly used. We have these threads before and when it all shakes out Leupold carries the day 3 to 1.

When we get threads that involve sitting around the campfire bemoaning having to borrow a gun because the scope went bad it is almost always followed up with " should have went for a better scope" and that is commonly followed up with " leupold" with Zeiss being right in the running. I' ll leave out the Swar...... scope since it breaks the $300 mark.

Go to gunbroker.com and search under scopes -- you can do mighty fine and come in under $300. If the gun is the problem, then I assume you will replace it with another. Then keep the scope and put it on the next one.

Never Go Undergunned,
EKM

I wouldn' t buy a new scope quite yet. It may be the gun/ammo combination. Check all of the screws and mounts and make sure they are tight and in the right spot. Buy a couple different brands of ammo, and then go test groups. Certain guns just don' t like certain types of ammo. A friend of mine had a similar problem with a Win. Model 70 300 Win Mag. It has a BSA 3-9x40 on it. He couldn' t hit the broadside of a barn with it. Upon closer inspection, We noticed that one screw was loose, we tightned it up and it hasn' t lost it zero since. ALWAYS start with the least expensive solution. A couple boxes of ammo and a tube of lock-tite cost a lot less than a $300 scope. Then you can spend more money on ammo, which means more practice and more fun.

One other thing you may want to try........ Clean the crap out of the barrel! There may be decades of copper in the barrel since a good many people don' t clean them well enough. Hoppe' s #9 is great for powder, but not worth a hoot for copper no matter how many times you scrub it. And that was the mainstay for many years.

check out Danny45' s reply.....I' d not assume the scope is the problem so quickly.....

Sorry friend but the Remington Auto is known for bad patterns....some shoot great....some don' t.....find a friend that has good groups with another scope and add it to your gun.....you' ll save a bundle!!pay him for his inconvenience.....

I have shot a dozen 7400 Rems. None shot worse than 2 1/2 inches. They can be a little touchy on ammo though.

RE: Scopes.................under $300

I' ve haven' t fired as many of the 7400' s as I have the older 742' s. But I' ve fired a number of 742' s that would have had to got very lucky to break the 6" mark. Many of them would barely stay in a milk jug at 100 yards. You might try a different load and get better results or it could just be the rifle. Has anyone else fired the rifle for accuracy? You might let someone you know is a solid bench rest shooter try the rifle.

I gete accused of being so cheap I squeak when I walk, but I have had a lot of luck with both Simmons and BSA scopes, which are way under $300.

RE: Scopes.................under $300

You know I never once thought about the ammo. That would save alot of money on a couple of boxes vs. a $300 dollar scope. I know the gun is not dirty, because I don' t let the sun set on a dirty gun. Thanks you guys, and with that said I' ve got to start a new " Ammo for 7400' s" thread.

Thanks again
