Default 308 for deer? match bullets? long range?

would you or have you ever used match bullets for deer hunting?
big no no? what's your 308 deer load? 150? 165? 180?

anyone ever use a 308 for deer at longer ranges? past 200 yds? results?

looks like a 308 has enough energy out to 500yds? past that? max 308 deer range in your thoughts?

Match bullets may not expand well enough to be reliable for killing a deer. If you go to the bullet manufacturers web sites and read about thier different bullets they do not recomend match bullets for hunting.

The .308 is a great choice for a hunting calibur whether it's deer or elk, or moose, it's a fantastic choice. I have shot itnsiderably over the years and found it to be a very , very good deer rifle at ranges exceeding 400+ yrds. I have shot match grade ammo in it, but do not recall all the particulars of those rounds as a friend of mine loaded them for me, i can tell you that they were 165gr bt. the other rounds that i have fired through it are a 168gr bthp match grade, and it is very deadly.
Lastly, as far as preformance at a great distance, take a look sometime at what the Army and Marine snipers are doing with them in Iraq and Afghanistan. That will tell you more about the preformance of the .308 then i can here in this forum.

Several years ago I bought a box of 168gr hornady match bullets to try out of my 30-06. Darn things shot awesome so I thought I would give them a try hunting. Shot 6 deer with them, every single bullet came apart. Only one was shot threw the shoulder, the rest threw the lungs. I found all 6 deer, but wasnt happy with the bullets performance so I stopped using them. Have to admit some dropped in the tracks like they were struck by a lighting bolt and the internal damage was unbelievable, but I want a bullet that holds together and gets complete penetration on game.
