.270, 30.06, 270WSM

I own a savage .22 and i couldn' t be happier with it' s performance. it is Dead ON, there' s more than a few squirrels that learned that the hard way. now i' m looking for a Savage big game rifle (whitetail, moose, elk and bear). i' ve narrowed my choice down to the following calibers .270, .270WSM and 30.06. i' ve been leaning toward getting the 30.06 but thought i' d see what other hunters had to say. Any advice would be greatly appreciated....[8D]

For what you are talking about hunting a 30-06 would be a good choice. I like the 270 Win, but on moose I think it might be a little light. I won' t even say anything about the 270 WSM.

I prefer the 7mmremmag over the three cartridges mentioned. It shoots flatter than the 30-06 with more energy and recoil is still quite manageable for the average person.

For elk and moose the 270 caliber is light.Step up to a 30-06,300wsm,or even a 338 win mag.Yes I shoot deer with a 338 win mag and it works gggrrrreat!!!;)

Seeing as we are diverging from the original post a bit, I would suggest you consider getting the 7, but make sure the rifle you select could be ' smithed to a STW in the future!!!

I think your decision is sound.

For a first time high power rifle with a large venue of game to be taken, out of those cartridges listed I would go with you on the 30-06. Perhaps its a " jack of all trades and master of none" cartridge; however, in building an " early stages" rack of rifles a 30-06 is a darn good " anchor" .

If one owns a 22LR, a 30-06, and a 12 gauge, then you have a great start to a rack of firearms that will take you a long way.

With sticking to your original question on which of the 3 I' d choose, for the game listed, I would have to choose the 30.06.
