Of the ones that you mentioned, I' d choose the " 06. However, you don' t say what kind of bear. I' m assuming black...and the 06 would be fine.

frizzellr,

I highly doubt it. Well, maybe Remington' s short mag line, but not Winchester' s.[8D]

.30-06 is the way to go. I' d choose the it over the 7mm mag for elk and moose. It may not get there as fast, but it has a greater bullet diameter.

bearhuntr, I said the short magnum CRAZE will be forgotten, not that they will go away. But people will wise up to the hype and go back to the old standbys.

Go with the 06' , i agree with frizzellr the short magnum craze will fade. No offense to anyone who owns one.

I have a 270 wsm no offense taking but id go with a 30-06 sense elk, moose, and bear are mentioned.

Well heaven forbid anyone use anything other than the latest and greatest whiz bang cartridge that the gun writers tell us to use. The 30-06 may be outright boring but I bet it will still be knocking game flat on its butt long after the short magnum craze is all but forgotten.
...taken from an earlier post:

You can bet it has wounded every type of game in North America too....simply due to nostalgia and the fact it is chambered in inexpensive rifles.
I completely agree with you, friz, I just saw your post and was reminded of how much you were anti-.30-30, because it was an outdated round ;) It made me smile to see you pro-progress in rifles in one thread, and anti in another.

The ' 06 is a more widely-used round, if price and availability factor into your decision. If they don' t, I wouldn' t mind using the WSM. Otherwise, the ' 06 all the way. I wouldn' t put the .270 in the same category.

The same category as a .270 WSM or a 30.06?? Interesting theory!

FL/GA Hunter, I don' t dislike the 30-30 Win because it is old. I dislike it because of its limited range, inferior ballistics and marginal accuracy. I also dislike it because it is the first thing that is pushed on a kid or a non-knowledgable shooter as the " perfect deer cartridge" or a " great brush buster" . I used to live in the middle of a hunting club and would get called to bring the dogs when someone lost a deer. I tracked many a mile through the Big Thicket because of the 30-30 and the 223 so I have a healthy dislike for both. Within 150 yards it works. Not great, but it works. Anyways, I digress.
