A little slower to use than a lever action, but it will kill deer just as dead as any other .30/30. If you are talking about the model 340, the only thing I have against them is that they are butt ugly! However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and the first two deer I ever saw shot were taken with a 340 in 30/30; both were one shot kills and one was on a dead run.

My feelings on a 30-30 is it's a great deer round if you are shooting under 200 yards. You might could stretch a little further with the Hornady ammo they have now. It will do what the majority of hunters need, and in fact be more than what they need. It really is a great deer round.
That being said, if you are somewhere where long range shots are common, it's not the caliber for you.
So it really just depends on the type of hunting you are doing.

I had a 30-30 bolt gun once, although I thought it was a stevens...not sure. Its was fun for a while but the trigger was really bad and the scope mount was very awkward. I guess with sights it wouldve been more useful but I only use scopes.
