Marlin 336 in 30-30 is a good beginner rifle & can cleanly kill deer further than 100 yards. Light recoil ammo is fairly cheap. Also a .243 is a great starter rifle too if you'd prefer a bolt action & it can kill deer out to 300 yards if you do your part. Any other questions just PM me.

Marlin 336 is the best 3030 but be prepared to pay around 350+ for a new one. I'd look at pawnshops for a used one the new ones are crap but the older ones are great also used I've seen em for 200. Dang I remember buyin em for 125 and thinking that was high times are changing

The Marlin 336 is an awesome gun, beginner or not. After 38 years of hunting I finally came full circle and went back to the 30-30. In all that time I've onlt taken 1 shot that would have stretched the 30-30's limitations. I've also come to grips with the fact that I'm not a good enough shooter to hit anything beyond 200-250 yards. Two back surgeries and bursitis in my shoulders sure makes me appreciate the lighter recoil too.

Too bad...if you were anywhere close to CO I could hook ya right up. I have a 1973 Winchester Model 94 thats just lookin for a permanent home. It was gifted to me by a non gun owner who got it when his father passed away. Nothing special but it shoots good and it'd be cheap.
