Otis i am selling the 7 mm mag and getting a .30-06. From all I' ve read seems like a good cal. for mountain elk and moose hunting; and if needed I can cut the barrel down to reduce weight which is not an option with the " Mags" . Thanks to all for the info.

Losthwy, the .30-06 is a great cartridge, but so is the 7mm. There is so little difference between the two, I don' t think it is worth the " cost" . The value of your time, plus what you " lose" (vs. what you paid) buying the ' 06 with markup to be back in essentially the same place you started doesn' t seem like a good deal. I didn' re-read all the posts, and don' t remember if you mentioned the kind of gun your 7 was. Several people mentioned 7mmSTW, which has ballistics similar to .300 win. You could have a ' smith modify your 7 to STW and be alot better off, in my opinion, at greatly reduced cost.
