Can't find rifles in .260 Remington....
Hello all, been a while. I'm at my wits end finding a rifle in .260 that meets these requirements:
20" barrel (or close) .260 Remington Weight under 8 lbs empty (lighter the better) Can't be a Remington Model 7 (too short/small) No 3-position safeties under $1,000 I REALLY want a Tikka T3 in this caliber but they are not available in the US (says Beretta). As always I am looking for a used one. I believe the Tikkas are the best gun for the money, at least as a beginner gun. Any ideas about rifles available in .260 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

If that's what you are set on, I'd get .243/7mm-08 or .308 in your choice of rifles and have it rebarreled...
|
The Good Lord is giving you a sign, to opt 7mm-08 instead...
|
I considered 7mm-08 but I already have a .308. I'm set on a .260. It's a great little round.
I also considered 6.5x55 Swede but not going to do it. |

Good choice. Keep checking Gunbroker.com. I bought a Sako 75 in that caliber and love it. Hard to find these days but worth it when you do.

try the internet, no one goes to gun shops any more

www.gunbroker.com www.auctionarms.com www.armslist.com I'm really looking for specific model and brand suggestions, not looking for someone to find me one for sale, though that would be nice. |
The only two factory bolt rifles I know of are going to be the Remington model seven and the Ruger compact laminate.
|
i find it funny that beretta wont import tikkas in 260 to the usa but they will to canada, or at least stoeger canada is still dealing with our products. looking at the wholesale sports catalogue right now i can see that they have the t3 hb stainless in 260 for 1059.99 cad (yes our guns are pricey up here, might be because of a different distributer), and a t3lite blued in 260 for 769.99 cad. i think wholesale sports have a few stores across the border but when checking on their american website i noticed that they dont have them in .260

Like SilverTip said ,Try the sites .Don't forget www.gunsamerica.com They have a very large selection.Meanwhile I'll keep a look out if something comes throught my dealer.

why play with a rifle that uses a round no one stocks on thier shelfs unless you do all your own handloading..setting yourself up for trouble down the road on a hunt..i have to shake my head at people that does this,,do you think a deer cares about 100 ft per sec
on a round...i care about the differance in the cost of a box of rounds though...but if your heart is set on it go for it ,,,good luck |
If the issue is barrel length, that can be fixed by a gunsmith, cut and re-crown.

have E.R.Shaw build you one to your specs for $700 or so...

Swampdog beat me to it ....
http://www.ruger.com/products/m77Haw...ct/models.html Unless you object to the real short tube, the Ruger Hawkeye Laminate Compact might fit the bill. Comes in 260 |

I have one and if I were looking I'd search for that one over the few other choices. |

Keep shakin your head....those of us who handload tend to like the .260 Rem and often shake our heads at guys who don't handload and buy factory ammo. With a few hundred pieces of brass I wouldn't care if there were no factory ammo ever made again for it. But thats just me.

This one has a 16 1/2" barrel not 20" But it is close to what you want . Hi, thank you for the response. Yes i did know about those and have considered them. Unfortunately I don't do 3 position safeties. Love the old MKI's but not those. |

*EDIT* Nevermind they are based on Savage actions and Boyd stocks........ugggggggg. |
Here's a M-70 featherweight that formerly was a .243. I got a fwt barrel from Douglas and chambered it to .260.....I cut the barrel to 20" and shortened the stock for a lady in Wisconsin that is 5'-3"
She wanted the iron sights so I put them on.....it's about as good as one gets if he wants a .260.....and depending on what one pays for the original gun it's well inside your budget! |
I didn't notice what price range you're looking for but maybe you can find a used Kimber Montana in the 260 Rem... ?
|
Thanks I'll keep my eye out for one.
|
Seeing as there is a serious lack of factory rifles under a grand chambered for .260 I would suggest simply looking for a used rifle or used action of your choice chambered for any of the .308 based cartridges and do a simple barrel swap of your choice.
|
how about a 6.5mm Rem. Mag. instead then?
when they remade the 600's I think they were 673...had 22" barrels I believe. |

I have considered that, however that usually sends the total far above what I have currently budgeted. You could easily come in under a grand for a simple rebarrel and refinish job on a used donor action like a Remington or Howa.. |
I've got a model 7 in 260 I just bought a adult stock for it and it fits great now.it had a youth stock on it when I got it wich made it short but now it fits me as good as my tikka 30-06 and my rem 700 270

Not if you don't get stupid with it.

sounds like you want a light weight compact rifle but you dont really want it "compact" if the model 7 is too short......maybe an older ruger ultra light. i have one from the mid eighties in 243. it has a tang saftey instead of the three way, what i dont know is if they chambered that rifle in 6.5x55.....i realllly dont think so and those were out of production i think by the time the 260 rem was introduced. im sure someone will correct me if im wrong
