No Browning BLR, Weatherby Mark V Deluxe, or Rem. 700 LSS? I just look at those guns and my heart melts. I actually take the last one to the woods with me. I get the others out and clean them occasionally.

For a collection or for more of a accumulation? To me there's a difference.
For a "collection", I'd say any special variant that fits comfortably with the specific, narrowed group. Far an accumulation, I'd say having at least one each of the following would be the standard.
Ruger Single Six
Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60
Remington 870
Marlin 336
1911 of some sort
That being said, I'd worry far less about how others view the makes/models and more abut having your own individual needs & preferences met. It's not quantity, it's quality!

Kinda vague on what you are looking for...
Actual historically important collectable guns, or a working hunting firearm collection?
Target shooters collection? No offense, but a Glock doesnt really sanwich into any of em other than a "wanna have" collection or practical defense collection. In my opinion.

I have been putting my collection together based on the needs of me and my 11 year old son-
Rifles-
Ruger 10/22 for him (small game/plinking)
Marlin Model 60 for me (small game/plinking)
Remington 700 .243 for him (deer)
Kimber Montana .243 for me (deer)
Shotguns-
Mossberg 500 20ga for him (upland/clay/small game)
Remington 870 Super Magnum 12 ga camo for him (turkey)
Remington 870 Magnum for me (upland/clay/small game)
Mossberg 835 camo for me (turkey)
Muzzleloaders-
Omega .50 for him (deer/large game)
Omega .50 for me (deer/large game)
Traditions Pursuit Pro 12ga camo for me (turkey)
We have just about any type of hunting season covered with firearms.
The only wants I have left is a Kimber 1911, a Ruger LCP .380, Marlin 336 30-30, and maybe some old military rifles just to have fun with.

If I had 30 seconds to grab ONE gun, and jump in a spaceship leaving earth before some global catastrophe,...I'd grab my Ruger MKII target. I'd cry outloud a LOT mind you all the way to Saturn, but that one pistol and a brick of 500 would get me by for awhile until I found a deal on a photon revolver!
Now that I've scared myself that this might happen, I'm going to pack a duffle with my 1911, Marlin Camp45, Mini14, 4"629, MkII and all the ammo and clips I can stuff in there. With some socks, drawers, and a tooth brush.
