The most felt recoil
I like alittle recoil. What gun/load has come the closest to being near your limilt?
For me,the most recoil has come from a Winchester 1300 w/plastic butt plate shooting 2 .oz 4x6 3" duplex loads. The gun was so light it wasn't funny when the trigger was pulled. |
Ithaca 12ga deerslayerII w/ winchester partion gold slugs, Ouch! That gun has since moved on down the line.
|
10 gauge, pulling double triggers on a SXS; when I was a kid (nut !!!).

REM Mod 7 in .350 Rem Mag shooting Nosler 250 grain Partions at 2500 FPS without the scope on.
My Swarovski 1.25-4X tames it "a little" when mounted. For "big guns" I’ve own a: 300Win, 8x68S, .45-90 and a .45-100, and a Benelli SBE in 3.5", but the little .350 trumps them all in the pain department. It’s great for carrying, fantastic in the woods, just painful off the bench. Chuck |
Sharps 45-110.

My .458 Win Mag. : 500 gr 2300 fps
or my S&W 500: 500 gr 1400 fps will seperate the men from the boys. bb |
has anyone shot a .378wby? I've heard that's the worst...1 shot and you've had enough...
300win mag 340wby 12ga. Have yet to find something I couldn't/wouldn't shoot. Perhaps something from 375hh to .458lott will but I think those will be a big shove rather than a sharp punch. |
Would love to try a big bore. The .577 T-rex would be nice.Once anyway!
|
Time to get yourself one I'm thinking! haha.
Maybe not the .577trex but everyone needs a .375H&H, or .458lott/win.mag. course a .375 I believe "is only" a medium bore so I guess everyone needs a .458 then??

In my Browning BPS 3.5" 12 gauge, my turkey loads are the Nitro Ammo Co's 2 & 5/8 ounce duplex load. A friend who shoots the identical load and identical shotgun calculated the recoil to be almost 85 lbs. I'm not sure if it is 85 lbs but I can tell you that I have had enough after three or four shots from the bench!

12 gauge 2 ounce turkey load out of a Stevens 311 with a steel butt plate.
|
My Rem. 870 12 ga. with it's cut down stock shooting the barnes expander slugs. (1,900 fps) It seriously takes the fun out of shooting.
Shooting slugs out of my little H&R topper was pretty bad too. |
I had the pleasure of shooting 20 rounds out of a Barrett M82 .50 BMG. As bad as that gun kicked it couldn't come close to my Remington 870 with 2 ounce turkey loads. They actually eject themselves a good five or six feet from the gun, and my right cheek always hurts way worse than my shoulder.

I took a 375 h&h on a rock chuck hunt once. It was an older model 70 shooting 300 gr partitions. Ran a box of 20 through it that day. At the end of that day it hurt to shoot my 243.
|
Rem 11-48 shooting anything high brass with a steel buttplate.
|
DeerandbearhoG, I remember well
I swear my Ithaca shotgun shooting slugs, was worse than the elephant rifle, I was then shooting.
Still remember the look a an older shooter next to me at the range. I was shooting the Ithaca with the slugs and was getting a weird look. The older fella was shooting a .222 with a shot shell bag full of sand, protecting his shoulder. |
the .375 H&H was pretty rough but not as bad as the 12 gauge shotguns loaded with slugs that I've benchrested.
|
My uncle was in a pawn shop and a customer walked in with a .378 Weatherby and his shoulder in a sling. Apparently separated his shoulder with it.
Uncle bought it for $200. This was 15 years ago. He's only shot the rifle once. Tom |
I was shooting my "new" 1957 ithaca37 feather wt this morning. I had some problems w/ jams, using some federal target loads, the other day, at the trap range, so I brought a bunch of different loads w/ me, to see if they jammmed as well. Shot some Wolf power slugs (like breneke), some rem sluggers, and some old s&b buckshot, all 2&3/4. The recoil wasnt too bad at all, although the buckshot did knock me back a bit. I was very happy w/ the way the old gun shot, no jams (must have been the federal ammo), and I was able to hit the top of a paper plate @ 25 yds, w/ all the slugs, aiming at the center, not too bad for shooting off hand, and plenty accurate for short range work.

I have never shot anything bigger than say a 300 weatherby mag or 338 mag but I like alot on here got " WRAPPED" the hardest by a Rem 870 slug gun with 3 1/2" mag slugs. It litterely felt like I took a straight right between the eyes. My eyes watered after the shot. What a tooth rattler. It wasn't my gun because it would not have shot those EVER again.

I got a new thumbhole Mossberg 535 turkey gun this year. 22" barrel and a synthetic stock. LIGHT GUN! The kick isn't in my shoulder, but in my face. Half a box of 3 1/2" Winchester Supremes put a bruise on my cheek that made it look like I'd been in a bar fight. I've shot guns that were uncomfortable, but this is the first one that actually hurt to shoot! Since then, I got a higher set of sights and I don't have to stick my cheek bone quite as tight against the stock. That made all the difference in the world! Now it only kinda hurts... but it still hurts the turkeys more :s4:

Many years ago I bought a Brazilian made 12 gauge single shot shotgun on sale for $30. The gun was a real crippler and I am talking about the shooter, not the game. I have long since gotten rid of this very poorly designed weapon and pity whoever has it now.
I am surprised by all the people on this thread that are getting really punished by 12 gauge shotguns from reputable makers like Remington and Ithaca. I own a Remington SP-10 Magnum semi-auto 10 gauge shotgun and regularly shoot 3.5 inch magnum 2 1/4 oz. turkey loads and 1 3/4 oz. rifled slugs with it and have never been hurt by that gun even if I shoot it all day. It could be that the gun's hefty weight of 11 pounds and semi-auto action take some of the jolt out of the recoil when firing 3.5 inch magnums. |
The 12ga shotshell recoil, even the heavy stuff doesnt bother me much while hunting, or target shooting, but shooting sabot slugs from the bench is torture. I gave up on em, and now use my muzzleloader, where centerfire rifles are restricted.

Marlin 45-70 with Buffalo Bore ammo off a bench. Punches pretty well, leaves me wanting more....
|
45-70 gov from H&R buffalo gun.
Mossberg 500 12ga with no limb saver butt pad and 3" Hornady Slugs (2100 fps) My favorite recoil is an old Springfield 30-06. It has a nice comfortable push that feels like a shoulder massage. |
I got a great deal on a ten inch(non ported) Encore pistol barrel in 444 Marlin once. After a few rounds, I realized exactly why it was a "great deal". It made my 45/70 ported Contender barrel feel like a wussycat!!

3 1/2 " Magnum Turkey Load out of my Mossberg 835. I shoot the same thing every year for turkeys and I hate patterning it now as much as ever if not more. It's not as much the blow to the shoulder as it is the punch to my cheekbone resting on the stock. My face is always red after 3 shots. And after 3 shots I am done until I am actually hunting and a longbeard steps out in front of me, then it's his turn to have his bell rung.

X 2...That punch to the cheek with a 3 1/2 turkey load from my 835 feels like a grown man punched me in the face. I hate patterning mine too. |
Thanks MO Archer, I thought I was being a sissy! HA :happy0157: I see Hunt12Ga also experienced it. Must be a common thing with a Mossberg.
|
I've shot a 458WinMag ... not bad with somewhat tame handloads. The worst was a Sharps in .45-120 with a curved brass butt plate. THAT left a mark! It was loaded with smokeless powder and pillow ticking for a buffer. We called it "shooting a chicken out of the barrel" because it looked like a huge puff of feathers blowing out the end when you touched it off. LOL:D
The worst handgun was a T/C Contender in 375JDJ and HOT handloads. Ouch! I shot it 3 times and my hand went numb. It was far worse than the 500SW that the same guy owns. He owns all of these big guns that I've shot, as a matter of fact, but has started hunting with a 7mm-08. Getting older and wiser, I guess. |
I used to have an 835 and I could handle the 3.5's in it. I had a Winchester SX2 and the big shells didn't phase me much out of it. That dern 535 is just so much lighter than the 835! It's crazy what we will put ourselves through to kill a silly bird :p

A 2 way tie
A...a H&R steel butt 12 guage shooting slugs..after 5 shots ..SOLD the gun..horrible recoil B, 870 Mag. shooting 3 1/2 turkey load..layed me on my back while in the kneeling position |
My Browning upland special kicks like a mule. Short barrel & no recoil pad on te but. I paid over $1300 for this shotgun & I hate to shoot it.
|
My 870 with 3.5 00 buckshot is pretty dang ruff.
|
Worst beating I ever took was from a .410 . The stock was short and I'd been deer hunting and all tuned up on my much longer stocked rifle ,I poped up on a running rabbit and bam got the rabbit but the but was about 2" off my shoulder .
Outside of that probably an 1.25 oz slug in a 1200 Winchester , I had cheek bruise from. |
.338 win mag in a ruger 77 with the synthetic skeletonized stock
|
I have to say shooting 3" sabots from my Rem 870 is pretty bad. Afterwards, I shot a competition grade .22, and after the first shot I thought it misfired because the crack and the kick were so light after shooting a couple of boxes of slugs.
|
870 express, synthetic stock 12 gauge shooting winchester partition gold sabots, brutal.
