Lever Gun Hunters

Well I went in yesterday to look at the 2nd Marlin 1895GBL that was sent to the shop and I was pleasantly surprised. This one was in really good shape. THe laminate looked a lot better on this one (the last one looked like someone had taken sandpaper to it and it was broke) and the action was a lot smoother. The only thing that I noticed was when I loaded it up. After putting the first bullet in I could not push the 2nd one in without having to catch the rim of the first bullet and pushing it forward a little. I am sure this is something that I can work on. Everything else seemed to be in order with it. Hopefully Remington is starting to get their act together on these guns and will not let the good name of Marlin be run into the ground. I do believe I am going to run it by the gunsmith and have him smooth everything out on it just to get it as smooth as possible.

11pt I shot this winter with my wife's Marlin 1895 Guide Gun Stainless .45-70. Rough scored (conservatively) 155class. 325grn Hornady LeverEvolution FTX at 250yrds (30" of drop, the horizontal crosshair was about 4" above the tips of his rack). Bushnell Elite 3-9x40mm scope. It's only running about 1795fps at the muzzle, but it hits like a truck.
I also run a Marlin 1894 .44mag for deer in thick cover.

I've taken deer with two marlin 336's. One a .44 mag, and one a .30-30.
Here's a couple pictures.
First deer, a 50 yard shot with the .44mag back in 2001. I looked like a pumpkin
Two doe with the .30-30 here
My grandpa shot this one with a .44mag last year.
I've shot a lot of doe with the .30-30. A couple little bucks as well. I love the feel of carrying a lever. I'm looking into getting a .357mag this year to carry on rainy days... at least that how I intend to justify the purchase! I love my remmy 700 .30-06. But these levers are just too much fun.

My all-time favorite rifle to hunt with to this day is my Savage 99 C in .308. I have taken a number of deer and a couple elk with it over the years in several different states...and made the "shot of a lifetime" with it many years ago in eastern Oregon on a massive Mulie. I don't hunt with it as much as I use to due to an eroding throat, but it still accompanies me as a back-up regularly. I also have a couple Marlin 336's (2 in 30-30 and 1 in 32 spec), several other 99's (.243, 308, 22-250, 284 Win, 300 Sav), a Browning Mod 71 in .348 Win and Browning BLR's in 243 and 308...I have hunted with most of these rifles (and several of them once belonged to my grandfather who also hunted with them). I have recently spent more time behind a couple of my bolt rifles...but still love my lever guns.
