Guess there really wasn't a gap between the 280 and 7Mag.....I'd say Remington pretty much sewed up the 7mm market....

Certainly nothing the 280AI couldn't handle.

The WSM line killed the SAUM.
Some of the early 7mm WSM's reportly had feeding issues, which hurt initial sales.
IMO, the 270WSM's popularity has hurt 7mm WSM sales more than anything else.

ya the .270 and .300WSM happened...so a guy who's worried about a cartridge dying buys either of those 2...before a 7mm WSM

The 7mmWSM is very popular in the custom gun world, it is a great round.

The SAUM's are all but gone because Winchester had/has the short magnum market locked up tight. I bet the new RCM's will also go the way of the SAUM's.

Metric cartridges have never been incredibly popular in America. The only two that have ever really made it have been the 7mm Rem mag and very recently the 7mm-08. The .280 has never been all that popular either. Most all metric designated cartridges have had lack luster sales compared to other "American" cartridges.

And early on Jack O'Connor helped solidify the .277 bullet diameter in American history. So much so that the .280 just couldn't catch up.

That 280 AI is an interesting mutt....

I think the 7mm Remington Magnum is such a perfect round that it's hard to beat it. There's also the 270 Win and 280 Rem. The 7mm short mags were just not needed, I guess.

They were the answer to the question nobody asked.

The economy dealt the final blow to just about all the short mags, boy you don't even hear of anyone buying one these days, I haven't even heard the word mentioned at all of our local sportsmens clubs..maybe everyone found out the in the end they didn't offer that much difference from the old standby 7mmRM and 300 WM...plus all the problems feeding that the little guys caused..I have a model 7 in 300 saum, I think it's the ultimate mountain rifle, short, fast, powerful and super accurate...

We sell a pile of 270WSM's and quite a few 300WSM's down here.
