Hey JK, this might be a little more labor intensive than cold bluing but I've heard good things about it. It's called Niter Bluing, the same type of bluing that high end European shotguns have on them. The active ingredient is potassium nitrate, which is saltpeter, it's the active ingredient in stump remover. You can even do an e-bay, search for potassium nitrate and it's really cheap that way. I've yet to try it, but I bought two bottles of stump remover and a loaf pan to melt it in. I don't have anything to blue right now so I'll probably wind up trying it on some tools.
