Default Best Tactical/Home Defense Shotgun?

I am considering picking up a 12 gauge shotgun that would be suitable as a tactical/defensive weapon. What I'm envisioning is something with a pistol grip rather than a full stock and a magazine capacity of 7 rounds or more. Any recommendations?

Drache read my mind, I've got the Mossburg 500 in the .410 model, and it came with the pistol grip and two barrels, one is short, IC, and is only about 20" long.I figure, if a "bad guy" hears it go off about once, he'll be heading for the hills, even though it only throws about 3/4 ounce load, that should park most in thier tracks at 20 feet. This gun only holds 5 rds. but if ya need more than that, you need back up!

The beauty of a scattergun is that the performance of the round doesn't really matter, if an intruder hears the sound of a pump action being racked they will run (unless they are stupid enough to stick around and get shot). If you want to shoot an intruder buy a pistol, if you want to scare them away from your family buy a pump anything, you won't even need ammo, just the noise of a pump action will scare the hardest bad-ass away.

I saw an interesting Tack-ticle shot gun in an article in the current (Feb) Guns and Ammo (I think it was). It shoots 1 1/2 inch shells. Thats not a type-o one and one half inch shells with a lighter slug at somthing over 1200 fps. I was just glancing through the mag. at a news stand and don't have any more details. It is a new specilty arm and may be very expensive and perhaps not availible to the public. Just thought I'd mention it.

I picked up a used Winchester 1300 defender pretty cheap and put a synthetic stock on it. It holds 7 + 1 of normal sized shells. Just pick up a pistol grip for it for around $25. Oh yeah, Aguila makes 1 3/4 inch shotgun shells that will fit into many 12 guage shotguns and will give you 50% more capacity, however they are said to only function reliably with 1300's and 870's. These mini shells come in birdshot, buckshot and slugs that go around 1250 fps. $6 for a box of 20.

I own a Mossber 590 with the parkerized, grey finish. It is nice, but for $400, I wish I would have bought another .45 handgun instead. Maybe if I added pistol grips, I would like it more. It is a nice gun though.

I saw the same article as you did, Duffy. I think that the SRP for that gun is around $300 or so, without actually having said G&A in front of me to know for sure.

And, every now and then, you might encounter an intruder who is high on crack/other drugs, or just doesn't believe that you'll shoot at him, and he charges. The idea of racking the slide of an unloaded pump shotgun is a good way to get killed in those situaions.

And, I'd use #2 or #4 birdshot before I'd use 00 buck in a house. More pellets, denser pattern, so at the ranges you'd find in a house, birdshot would likely be more destructive than buckshot. (Especially 1 1/4 oz. of #2s at 10 feet. It would be a huge hole.) And, birdshot are less likely to penetrate plasterboard walls.

I do know that Ithaca is producing the "Homeland Defense" Model 37 pump shotgun. Looks like it would do, if you want a new gun.

And, I seem to remember an article being published oh, about three years ago, about the usefulness of a 20 gauge as a home defense shotgun. Think of it--less recoil to deal with, and the coroner is going to be the only guy who will be able to tell the difference in the wound.
