If Moose is also a probability, I'd go the 06....in the Savage! Better choice of bullet weights and you can find ammo anywhere!
Just my ancient opinion.

Another vote for the Savage. I don't get why anyone would even consider the Remington 770. There are much better rifles for the same price or cheaper. That Savage being one of them. The other one I'd consider is the Marlin XL7. However, those Savages are really nice. A friend got one last year in .243 and loves it.

I'm no expert, but the 770 gets more harsh criticism and complaints as any firearm on the discussion boards. Every rifle ever made has its critics, but it seems inordinate with the 770.

without a doubt the savage. I have the 110 package and it's my most accurate rifle. Even with the cheap simmons scope (that i will replace eventually) it's a great gun.

you could also look at Marlin XL7. Just got me one of these and it's a fantastic gun for the price. Got the gun for $289, put a Nikon prostaff scope with rings and it came in around $450. Very close to the package prices being offered today.

I wouldn't take a 770 if it was given to me and I'm a big 700 fan. Remington really dropped the ball on that rifle.

If I had to choose between a Savage and a Rem 770, I'd stay home!

Look for used quality gun such as a Rem 700 or a push feed Winchester M-70.....you'll be way ahead of the game.

there is a reason why the 30-06 is the cartridge by which all others are measured. i've killed moose with a 270 win, but i prefer the 30-06.
