Savage or Remington??

ok so i work at an outdoors store but have always been the fishing type guy and when it comes to hunting i love it but i only go bird hunting. I want to get into big game hunting but i need some advice on a rifle. Ive got 2 in my eyes that are cheaper for a starting rifle but havent heard alot about them. My first choice is a Savage Model 110 that comes with a scope(cheap bushnell) and i can choose either .270 or a 30-06. The second choice is a Remington Model 770 with the same scope(cheap bushnell) which i can also choose a number of calibres in. If anyone has something to say about these package rifles, ex. which is a better model, good calibre to get it in, etc. then please share... much appreciated.

Not a huge fan of Savage but would get it over a Rem 770. You can get after market stuff if you desire for the Savage while your pretty much stuck with the 770 the way it is.

Since you said that you want to get into "big game hunting", then IMO of the rifles you listed you should get the Savage M110 in .30-06.

The factory scope is lousy and you should replace it as soon as you can with a higher quality scope such as a Nikon with BDC or a Burris in the 4-14x range...Savage rifles tend to be extremely accurate "out of the box"...

I would go for the Savage in .270.

+1 on the Savage (with a better scope). -1 on the Remmy 770.

A good friend of mine shoots a Savage 110 in .270 and loves it. It was very accurate out of the box, and with the handload we've worked up for it shoots less than a half inch at 100 yards. Factory ammo was shooting right around 1" at 100. It shoots flawlessly, and the action cycles very nicely.

I have a Remington 710 in .243 that was my first rifle. I believe the new(er) 770 is very similar to the old(er) 710, and I HATE the action on that rifle. My 13 year old brother shoots the 243 and loves it, but I can't stand the action, that's my only complaint.

+ 1 for Savage (with better scope).

If only one gun for big game get the .30-06.

Yeah i was leaning towards the Savage... im mostly going to be hunting deer but ill have some weekend trips for moose as well... i live in the good ol' canadian shield so thats the majority of what we hunt except bear but im not big on hunting them... the only thing im not sure on is calibre... ive got a tie between .270 30-06 or .308 but im thinking .270...accurate, fast and still big enough to take down a moose
