Good point, but you could probably check this by measuring the shoulders of the alignment bars on each side with calipers. You could also check by laying the edge of a flat bar or ruler along both bars to see if the angle is true.

Here is my problem w/ lapping the rings to make them line up,, especially if they are significantly out of line. We have to assume the inside of the rings are a perfect circle, if there are gaps in the mounts ,screws or whatever, causing two different rings to not be in alignment w/ each other, wont lapping them into sync create gaps by compromising the cylindrical shape of the ring ?(ouch head hurt) In other words, arent you taking material from where the rings do make contact w/ the scope tube, to make it come in contact w/ where it does not, creating a tiny gap, inturn creating less scope to ring surface contact? I thought the whole reason for lapping was to create more surface contact by removing the tiny pores in the metal and finish, and the whole point of the alignment tool was to get the rings in sync by adjusting the rings and mounts themselves, not the metal in the rings. I guess I could be wrong but if I am,what is the point of the ring alignment bars in the 1st place?

deer, IMO, when you lap rings, you makeing more surface available to hold the scope. When I started shooting 338 win mags, RUM's and others, I fought the scope moving all the time. And when they did slip, it would cause a big gash in the scope. You can't use signature ring bacause of this either. But when I started lapping, never had a slip, never had one slip and no marks on the scope.

I am now fighting an issue with my 460smith. But I can't lap them because I am using maxima ring.s

Is that the performance center smith with the built in rail on top?(nice) I would think warne rings would be in perfect alignment on that mount or on any warne mount. Cant you just lap the rings individually to smooth out the inside? I would just tighten the rings onto the lapping tool and back out slightly, till the tool moves back and forth, then tighten as it gets easier. Thats what I did and it smoothed out pretty evenly, those were DT rings and made the alignmnet adjusments by turning not lapping.

The pistol puts out 6" groups at 200 yards. Pretty awesome. I just think its just way too much for anything. Leupold told me to butt one ring against the center of the scope. The gun has so much power, it twists in your hand when shot, and the scope wants to rotate.

I can smooth the rings some. Which I haven't.

BC, You need to install a third rings on that scope. This should fix your problem quickly and easily.

I was told this by another fellow 500 shooter. Gun is so freakin heavy now anyway, guess another 6oz won't kill me. Fun range gun but difficult hunting pistol.
