Question For You Savage Guys??

I'm thinking about trading for an older Savage in 30.06. The gun is in very good shape and I would be getting a decent deal. My question is, how are the triggers on the pre-accu trigger rifles. Will they do pretty good with a trigger job?

They suck. You can tinker with them a bit but the design does not lend itself to a nice clean break ala Remington. My old 110 got the Sharp Shooter Supply target trigger as a replacement. I would only recommend that trigger for a bench gun and not for hunting, it is a very light narrow adjustment range. I have heard good things about replacement trigger from Rifle Basix and that would probably be my other choice.

The upside to the old Savage rifles, they tend to be cheap and very accurate regardless of their trigger shortcomings.

I agree with SKB's comments, the rifle basix trigger is very easy to install. they don't come preset like the Timney's though, so it makes having a trigger pull gauge very helpful. The factory trigger is adjustable but it'll be easier to just get the replacement and be done with it.

Actually I've had pretty good luck reworking the triggers on older & non Accu-trigger Savage models. The least I can RELIABLY & SAFELY get them down to is 2.5#-3#. Be SURE and have a gunsmith do the trigger job however because it only takes a couple .002 to mean the difference between a good trigger & an unsafe nightmare. If you choose to go the aftermarket trigger route, Timney & Rifle Basix both are good products, and will result in a decent trigger.

I had a very old Savage 110 ages ago and I had that trigger adjusted to the point were it was pretty good. It definately wasn't a target quality trigger but I shot a lot of deer with that old rifle.

The Rifle Basix Sav-2 is as good as you will need and is far better than the Timney.
