RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
I think it's official you're crazy!
Get a ray gun I think you'd be approaching those velocities with a .257 STW anyway...
Are you really looking for the ultimate deer rifle/catridge, or a .257stw?
I think I'd build a 6.5mm or 7mm rifle/cartridge as a ult deer rifle...

RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
For whitetails-MY ultimate deer rifle is a light 7mm08. Extremely accurate and mild recoiling, it performs all out of proportion to it's size and will kill any deer you can hit at REASONABLE range. Naturally that excludes ridge runner shots but his style of hunting requires extremely specialized equipment, preparation, & skill.

The "ultimate" deer rifle is such a personal thing.
Someone in the thick Eastern woods of the Eastern coast may choose a lever action 30-30 with iron sights or a tang peep sight.
Someone out West in Wyoming where teh wind blows constantly and the shots can be looooongmay prefer your 257 STW.
In other words there is no such thingas one single ultimatedeer rifle.
For me I think would be a Winchester model 70 feather weight chambered in .270 Winchester with a nice 3-9X40 scope sitting on top in Ded Nutz rings.

Well I got started thinking about this when I saw a Lazz Scramjet for sale over on LRH, and with an upcoming Wyoming mule deer hunt I'm thinking it might be a good time for a new rifle...and as some of you know, I like the "over the top" type of rounds...
RR, as much as I like the 7mm AM, I just won't be set up for LR hunting this trip, about 500 max this time...

try the numbers on a 7mm STW, running a 200 gr wildbat (BC around .8) @ 3100 fps.

sure, its been sold but the new owners assures us that they will offer them in the near future, but if not the 180 bergers are almost as good with a BC of .78 and a bit more velocity.

The STW seems like it would make a great LR rig, I hoping to find something that will be laser flat out to around 400-500, beyond that will have to wait until I build up a LR rig. Thats why the .257 STW caught my eye, but now I thinking just a regular 7mm WSM will do the trick pretty good.
