Ultimate Deer rifle....
Whatcha think?
I'm thinking a .257 STW with a 110gr AccuBond... |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
Deer only 243.....all around hard to beat the 300win mag
|
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
I think it's official you're crazy!
Get a ray gun I think you'd be approaching those velocities with a .257 STW anyway... Are you really looking for the ultimate deer rifle/catridge, or a .257stw? I think I'd build a 6.5mm or 7mm rifle/cartridge as a ult deer rifle... |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
For whitetails-MY ultimate deer rifle is a light 7mm08. Extremely accurate and mild recoiling, it performs all out of proportion to it's size and will kill any deer you can hit at REASONABLE range. Naturally that excludes ridge runner shots but his style of hunting requires extremely specialized equipment, preparation, & skill.

RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
The "ultimate" deer rifle is such a personal thing.
Someone in the thick Eastern woods of the Eastern coast may choose a lever action 30-30 with iron sights or a tang peep sight. Someone out West in Wyoming where teh wind blows constantly and the shots can be looooongmay prefer your 257 STW. In other words there is no such thingas one single ultimatedeer rifle. For me I think would be a Winchester model 70 feather weight chambered in .270 Winchester with a nice 3-9X40 scope sitting on top in Ded Nutz rings. |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
Well I got started thinking about this when I saw a Lazz Scramjet for sale over on LRH, and with an upcoming Wyoming mule deer hunt I'm thinking it might be a good time for a new rifle...and as some of you know, I like the "over the top" type of rounds...;)
RR, as much as I like the 7mm AM, I just won't be set up for LR hunting this trip, about 500 max this time... |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
Well, just ran the numbers and my .243 AI with 105gr Bergers will do everything that the .257 will do...so...whats next??
|
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner try the numbers on a 7mm STW, running a 200 gr wildbat (BC around .8) @ 3100 fps. RR |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
45/70? :D
|
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner sure, its been sold but the new owners assures us that they will offer them in the near future, but if not the 180 bergers are almost as good with a BC of .78 and a bit more velocity. RR The STW seems like it would make a great LR rig, I hoping to find something that will be laser flat out to around 400-500, beyond that will have to wait until I build up a LR rig. Thats why the .257 STW caught my eye, but now I thinking just a regular 7mm WSM will do the trick pretty good. |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
For me I would have to say a 280 AI with 154 gr. Interbond.
|
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
I think the best deer rifle is a 30 06 or a 25 06
|
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
Why go wildcat if you want to go with a quarter bore? Why not consider the .257 Weatherby Mag? The difference between it and the .257 STW is not that great and the .257 Wby brass is available. And in a pinch there would also potentially be ammo available over-the-counter. If you have an "Oh, s**t" moment and forget your 257 STW handloads at the house 500 miles away, you'd be officially SOL with the STW.
I've got a very good load worked up for my 257 Wby that should smoke a deer out to way beyond any range I'd attempt a shot using 71gr IMR-7828 and a 100 grain Barnes Tipped TSX. It has printed under 1/2 MOA with my M700, ad while my chrony is still busted, the book says it should be running in the 3500's from my 26" tube. I've also cooked up some rounds with 7828 and the 110gr Nosler Accubond bullets, but I haven't had time to get out to the range and test them yet. Mike |
RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
I guess I'm just looking at it from a practical standpoint considering the drawbacks of wildcat cartridges. If, like you, one puts the time and effort into the wildcat and learning how to take advantage of that extra 400 fps, then I'd say absolutely go for it. I think it's important to weigh the options before venturing into a wildcat project when a very close standardized alternative is available. If you recall, I also considered exactly what he's wanting to do, but I decided that I didn't want to go the wildcat route and chose to stay with the high-performance standardized rounds like the 7mm STW, RUM and what I eventually settled on with the 257 Wby.

RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
The ultimate deer rifle? If you are looking for a great deer rifle you can't go wrong with a .270, 25.06,or a .243.Any of those would be hard to beat. I prefer a .270. If your hunting the thick stuff,a 30/30 is the best in my book.If your lookingto shoot them from another county...well thats another story and is a sport within a sport. I prefer to get as close as possible. When they are just a few feet away it brings a lot of excitement tomy hunt. To other hunters the excitement comes from taking them at extremely long distances. To each his own and more power to everyone that is hunting legal and ethical.

RE: Ultimate Deer rifle....
I really need to move to a state that allows deer hunting with rifles. This season I am going to use a 357 mag pistol instead of my shotgun.
