At shorter distances the 7mm doesn't dump all it energy into the animal like the 06 does. This past year I had to track 3 different wounded deer and all 3 were hit, behind the shoulder, with a 7mag at fairly close range (under 100yds). The 7 is just going too fast at short distances to put all it's energy into the animal, it zips right through them and didn't knock them down. The 06 isn't as fast but it puts all it's energy into the animal and they go down. Now at 400+ on an Elk, it's a different story. In that case I'd go with the 7 because it has slowed up a bit and will put enough shock into the animal to put him down. The closer the range,the higher the velocity,the more rapid the bullet expansion,the more energy that is transferred to the animal. |

The 243 shoots flatter than either the 7mm or 06 and carries more than enough energy beyond 300 yards. If you compare the light magnum/high energyammo in the 06to 7mm ammo you will also find equal to superior ballistics in the 06 for the same cost. |

if you're going to buy one anyway, get the gun that feels the best in your hands. as for cartridge, there isn't a gnats worth of difference between an 06' and a 7 rem mag. what one will do the other will do equally well.

I was going to mention the 30-06 Horny Light Mag. 165gr SST with a muzzle Velocity of 3015 fpsout of a 24" tube slaps down the 7 mag 139gr, 154gr and 162grout to 200y and then looses face to the 139gr 7Mag.but only slightly.
The 30-06 Hornady Light Mags. are pretty bada$$. Not that you would neeeed all that! Helmsman is right.. aint a spit of difference between the two. IMHO I think the 7 Mag. is harder on barrels than the 30-06, given all physics equal. And I like the shoulder headspacing of the 30-06 vs. the 'belt' of the 7 Mag. JMO- And I think the 30-06 is more versatile. |

Get the 06 case and capacity, neckeddown to the 1/4 bore for a great varmit/deer combo.  Ifyou want to keep the .243 and just have something else the 7mm rem mag.;) |

stubblejumper, you are absolutely right... the 7mm HornyHEAVY MAG does muster more umph than that of the 30-06 LIGHT MAG.
I however, was... as stated in the post, not comparing the 7mm heavy mag. and the 30-06 light mag. The comparison is between the 30-06 light mag. and the every day, run o' the mill, Hornady Brand custom loading 7mm mag. There is no feasible way one could justifiabley compair the 30-06 Light Magand the 7mm mag. Heavy Mag.in such a way. That said, the HORNADY LIGHT MAGNUM 30-06 165GR. SST @ 3015 fps from a 24" bbl. will outwhack the HORNADY CUSTOM AMMO 7MM MAGNUM(NOT THE 7MM HEAVY MAGNUM LOADING) from the SAME 24" BARRELto 200y and then only loose a fraction to the 7mm mag. thereafter. Both rounds make a fine deer/elk extinguisher. |
