They do grow persian walnut in that area and use it on gun stocks. They call it have a name for it that starts with c (circadian ?) that I can't remember.

Never owned one so I don't qualify for the expert thing on the M44 .But what were you going to graft on to the stock . We used to do that with stocks on military rifles .

Circassian or English walnut. There are pictures of the wood on the internet if you want to compare it to see if it has the same grain.

we never tried any thumbholes or handles . We would slab the original stocks and replace every other piece with birch .It made a poorman's laminated stock . It's surprising how many things you can do yourself if you really try . Good luck on your project .
