I still can't find the date. I think the barrel must have been changed. The rifling is almost like new and the sights don't look that old. I'll take a pic and post it tomorrow if I get time.

I know a gunsmith that may trade me a like new Remington 788 22.250 for it. If he will, I'm probably gonna trade him. The gun may or may not be worth more than that but I don't care if he can make some dough because I basically got the Springfield for free.

Bigj71, I sure appreciate all of the info. I love this web site, there is always an expert in every catagory that is willing to help!!

Thanks for the pics.

Good looking rifle!

Eitherthe barrel has been replaced or the front sight is covering the markings (hard to tell from the photos). Both the front and rear sights are aftermarketand the stock is either an03A3 or late Remington 03 stock (no finger groves)that has also been sporterized. The trigger guard is an 03A3 stamped variety and the bolt has been polished. Also the striker/firing pin looks to be an 03A3 as well.

What you have is a fairly common conversion performed by many toturn these great battle rifles into great hunting rifles.

While the conversion hurts it's collector value it's still a great rifle. The only reservation I would have is with the low numbered receiver.
