10/22 options
I am finaly ready to buy a shooting rifle. I am not in a rifle state so high cal would do no good for hunting. I plan to use a ml for gun hunting deer. I have a shotgun or anything else.
I want a gun i can shoot all day and it not cost a ton of money.
So i am thinking a 10/22, the 10/22 because i would be able to change out the stock barrel and other parts so easy. I want a scope for shooting long distance but i would like to be able to shoot squrrials or rabbits at close range if i use it to hunt.
I would say my max range or target shooting would be 100 yards.
I would like to add a bipod but not sure what is a good choice for the 10/22.
I am hopeing i can do all that for under 400 but i would be ok with 500 because i want to make sure i get a black synth. stock.
So what scope would you recommend or out to 100 yards but also for close up shooting and what bipod would you recommend. What will itcost for the 10/22 with ablack stock, scope, and bipod.

RE: 10/22 options
Just finished my first 10/22 build and have plans for the next. If you just want a factory 10/22 they can be had for somewhere between $200 and $400 with a few mods. But starting from scratch I would buy a pawnshop special, used in any usable condition as long as the action is good the rest is disposable. Get a Green Mountain barrel of your choice of profile. If its bull barrel you may have to open the barrel channel - $120 to $140. Next buy a bolt buffer - $5 to $12 keeps the action in good shape much longer. As mentioned a replacement hammer from either Voltquartsen or Power Custom will cost you less than $35 and makes a huge difference in trigger pull. A Mueller 4.5 x 14 40 MM AO scope can be bought for around $120 and makes fine rimfire scope. Spend any leftover on some decent ammo and you will have a 22 lr that should get you squirrel accurate out to say 75 yds. and maybe more. At some point later when you have the $$ to upgrade the stock go for that.
I did this except for the hammer. I did my own hammer and adjustable sear, put a trigger overtravel stop in my factory trigger and it shoots great.

Hogue Overmold stock, Green Mountain bull barrel in any length, pretty much any 4x12x40 scope, an aftermarket hammer, extended mag release and you should be good for what you are wanting.

I had a 10/22 years ago. I live in PA so I couldn't use it for hunting (crazy I know). But it was a fun plinker and very accurate. You can pick them up new almost anywhere here for under $200. Play with it just the way it is. Or you can add all kinds of accessories and stuff to it as you wish. As suggested a trigger job is recommended. I never got one because for some reason the trigger on mine was good enough for me. At 50 yds, with a 4X scope, it would shoot dime sized groups all day long. And I was happy with that.
But if you want to get all you can out of it, a match barrel, trigger job, scope, thumbhole stock and shoot one hole groups the only limit you have with the 10/22 is your wallet.
Go for it.

Oh, they are just too much fun to play with. Got mine from a pawn shop, stock was cracked and barrel rusted...tossed them. Got the Boyd's stock on e-bay for 80 bucks, added the Whistlepig barrel (should have gone with 'dark' instead of 'medium'...oh well), did the trigger kit, put on a basic Bushnell scope (1.5x4.5, I think). I still need to add an extended mag release. A much fun plinker.
