Can' t decide
 

Ok, just bought a new 700 BDL stainless laminate for the heck of it. What are opinions on a choice of scope?

Was thinking of maybe around 3-9x40 or somewhere around there.

It depends upon the caliber and your intended use for the rifle, deer, dangerous game, long range varmints?

I' d put a Leupold 2X-7X on it. I have had one of these on a 7mm Magnum for over 30 years. It has adequate magnification on the top end, and a very large field of view at the low end. In addition, it is more compact and lighter in weight than a 3X-9X!!

For a dink around gun, I' d put a cheap scope on it, you don' t need a leupold to kill deer. I have a Tasco high country on my " not so serious" deer rifle (HC was their top of the line model when I bought it, back when they at least tried to make decent glasses) I got it for $150 I think new, it' s a 4-16x32mm. I do most of my hunting on 4x, so I have a large FOV, then I have the option of really seeing what I' m looking at if I need to reach out. Ol cutthoat is right (eldeguello), you don' t need a high magnification glass, but on a .270, your gun can throw them out there pretty far accurately and with enough stank to do the job, so why limit your range to less than your arm is capable of? My serious glass is a zeiss 3-12x56mm, big ol' field of view and really good magnification at 12x, plus it doesn' t fog and has NO paralax problems, etc. but then again it cost me more than I paid for the rifle it' s on, so go figure.

First pick would be a ZEISS CONQUEST and then a LEUPOLD both in a 3X9 40mm...:D

In the $175 range - 3x9x40 Burris Fullfield ll or 3x9x40 3200 Bushnell Elite. In the $250 range a 3x9x40 Leupold VX 2 or a Nikon 3x9x40 Monarch.In the $325-350 range a Bushnell 4200 Elite in 2.5x10x40,and in the $385-440 area either a 3x9x40 or 3.5x10x44 Zeiss Conquest or a 3.5x10x40 Leupold Vari X lll.Compare above scopes with your own eyes in overcast or better yet fading twilight and pick the one that performs best for your eyes and has the features you like the best.Things like rainguard,eye relief,finish,weight,ease of use,warranty,focus style,reticle size and prominence,mounting length,brightness,and clarity should all play into your decision.All the above scopes have a lifetime transferrable to other owners warranty and all have good to great optics.Good Hunting!

I would go with a Nikon Monarch 3x-9x. I have one on two of my rifles, and I think they work great. If you compare them with the equivilent Leupold, they are usually quite a bit less expensive.

I have no problem recommending a bushnell elite 3200 or 4200, Varix III or Burris Sign Series, as I currently have all these on one weapon or another now and they have functioned perfectly. I personally prefer 44-50MM objectives but a 40 would be fine. For deer 3x9 variable is just fine. I recently had the opportuntity to look through a Weaver grand slam and I was very impressed with how it looked, but never shot it. I
f I was buying a new higher end scope it would probably be the Zeiss Conquest 2.5x10x44, it looks great imo.

If that is out of your budget then take a look at either elites or the grand slam. I have never personally used a nikon, but had a friend who did and it was not favorable. However that may have been the exception rather than the rule.
