If you are talking about most versatile in the world, I' d have to go with the .375 H&H Magnum. It is the minimum requirement for dangerous game in some African countries so it is the starting point for the " most versatile" title. You' d look pretty silly hunting whitetail, mule deer or blacktails with one, though.

Seattle,
That " if" says it all. And thus the problem with these unqualified " best" / " most" / " favorite" questions and their ensuing answers -- they seldom, if ever, address:
" For what?"
" Where?"
" Why?"
I saw someone use the term " provincial" in a post once to address a related problem and I thought to myself " Right on -- this guy hit the nail right on the head."

Just funning here.....
I' ve never seen a 375HH used on deer but I' m sure they would find it hilarious. [X(]
I do know deer get a real giggle out of a 338Winnie.

So far 19 have voted for the 30/06 and 10 have voted for a collection of less versitile rounds. Half doz. didn' t really give a one round answer.
I am so glad that I do not have to hunt all game with any one round. There are so many great rounds that are suited to a particular size of game and stile of hunting.
I have never shot more than paper targets with a 30/06. But " IF" I had to choose just one round. It would be a 30/06. (now that makes 20 votes)

Why on earth do you guys keep insisting that the 30-06 is any more versatile than any other round? I am curious to know. So what if you can get rounds with 55 grain bullets. They won' t shoot well out of most rifles. So what if you can get a 220 grain bullet. If you can' t do it with a 180 grain then you don' t need to be using a 30-06. A 30-06 may be a jack of all trades, but it really is a master of none. I can do anything with a 308 that can be done with a 30-06 with less recoil. I can do anything with a 270 with less recoil....The list goes on.

Frizzellr, I can only justify my answer to you. The question was most versitile ... the only round that has so many different loads is the .30/06. and it therefore lends itself to many uses. While I' ll agree with you that you can do this or that with other calibers the .30/06 is the oly one with so many factory loads available. I say factory here because some of us handload and threfore we can make other loads that aren' t available to the general public.
