which do you prefer?

I say .30-06 because of the variety of ammunition available for it.

I'd say .308 since there's lots of military ammo available for it. The ballistics of the .308 and .30-06 are about the same with a 180gr bullet and generally that is a heavy enough bullet for most kinds of hunting.

In addition the .308 has the short action advantage and the lighter ammo and rifle advantage.

And if you reload you can spark up the .308 up to exceed factory loaded .30-06 shells but in a smaller package.

Not to mention there isn't a critter that wouldn't fall to it.

30-06. I just like mine and there are lots of different types of ammo out there for it. Although, I'd like to get a .308 some day.
