Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Alright, I have narrowed it down to two handguns. I dont exactly know all of the specs on them though. I do know that I liked how both of them felt in my hand. I am wanting to buy a handgun for home protection and so I have a sidearm out in the field. Which gun do most of yall prefer, SR9 or XD???

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
As much as I love rugers, and even knowing the ruger is american made,if it was me,I'd go with the springfield in a heartbeat. Two reasons-1st is the simple reason that the XD comes in the .45 acp that's been proven and well documented in actual battle/combat/defense situations. There's NO WAY anybody is going to convince me that a 9mm will perform as well as .45acp. Yes,I realize 9mm bullets in recent years have came a dramatically long way towards reliable defense round, especially in premium bullets driven at +P pressures, but with .45acp with +P pressure loads and premium bullets, there's no contest. In the design of the XD,recoil WON'T be a issue-even for your wife. Also,.45acp ammo is cheaper(slightly) than the .40s&w "middle road" but if you mostly want to be able to shoot economically, then the 9mm is for you.
As to the other reason, the XD is well proven in design as to behighly reliable, sturdy, reasonably accurate, and fairly priced. |
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
I have a XD-M and I like it lot but you said just and XD there I would have to go with the SR9.

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
x3 on the XD!
I have the XD 9mm service model. It's a great little pistol. I've never had a malfunction with the cheap ball ammo to the wide-mouth Federal Hydra-Shoks (my defensive ammo of choice). The grip is comfortable and the controls are well placed and easy to use. I also like that there is no manual safety (although the XD is offered with a manual safety now as an option). It has a grip safety like the 1911, with the trigger safety of the Glock, in addition to a firing pin block activated by the trigger when fully pulled. Simple to use. I traded a Glock 21 for this pistol several years ago because I found the Glock to be uncomfortable to shoot. I didn't like the grip angle or width (too steep and too wide), so even with my large hands it didn't point well for me, and it was WAY too large for my wife to handle well. My wife also didn't care for the recoil of the .45acp, but she is very recoil sensitive. Many women have no problems with a 45, especially a full sized "service" model. But I did like the Glock Safe-Action system, and it's no-matter-what reliability, so this is what attracted me to the XD. I love the pistol. I put a M6 tactical light/laser on the frame rail. So if something goes down when I'm gone, my wife can positively ID the threat, put the dot on the bad guy and pull the trigger until he goes down. Point-n-Click... no forgetting or fumbling for a safety when you're groggy, scared, the adrenaline's pumping, and you're staring down a charging meth junky with a knife and a nothing-to-lose attitude. RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
XD all the way! I've had problems with two of their revolvers, never trusted their centerfire autos, and Ruger seems to be prone to recalls. Never had a problem like that with Springfield. Nothing but shot after shot full on performance.

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
X5 for the XD.
Stalkingbear was right about the rounds also. I do not trust a 9mm round to save my life. I do have a 9mm loaded with +P rounds(Was also informed by Remington that +P rounds are not for polymer framed pistols) in my shirt drawer just incase. But my main protection gun is a XD40 Sub Compact(3" Barrel). I also have a XD45 Compact(4" Barrel) that my dad uses for protection. You can tell by looking at mine it has been through alot. Its only about 6 months old and is scratched and dinged all over. |

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Reliability is EVERYTHING (more so than accuracy, especially at self-defense engagement ranges) and given those two, I'd go with the XD.
Now break it in properly, then put at least 100 rounds of your selected defense - hollowpoint through it to make sure if feeds 100% (not all guns like all hollowpoints), and you're good-to-go. |
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
XD all the way
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
XD. They really have got that one right. It even has a little better ergo than the Glock. I have had no problems, concerns or wants other than night sights and maybe it could be narrower.

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
XD all the way - i bought the 4'' 45 acp model i love it. ive shot several other brands since - simply no comparison

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
ORIGINAL: stalkingbear . Also,.45acp ammo is cheaper(slightly) than the .40s&w "middle road" I too was recently shopping. went to a store and handled both the springfield and sr9. I chose the sr9. it felt better in my hand, I didnt like the grip safety, the ruger has a mag release on both sides that doesnt have to be 'switched', its already there, finally, the sr9 also has an actual safety. my suggestion is to get to a store that has both in stock and feel them out. also, my ruger out the door was less than $500. the springfields are higher than that. at the local place, about $100 higher. |
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
I really like the SR9's. Of the ones I've held it is my favorite. I also liked that it had a actual safety as well as the trigger safety. Moreso just the actual safety. I don't want a gun without much less a handgun without a safety. I'm not so sure why soo many new ones don't have them. Even with the trigger safety's if something hit the trigger just right it could still go off. Not likely but possible enough to worry me.
Anyone else know about the +P rounds not to be used in polymer framed pistols? If so why shouldn't you use them? |

As for the +P ammo, They said it is because the Polymer is not built to hold up to the power of the recoil the +P ammo makes. I belive they ment more for 45 then a 9mm. |
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
The springfield xd has a grip safety,as well as other internal safetys,so even without the manual safety (optional) it's still IMPOSSIBLE for 1 to just "go off" if something "hit" the trigger.

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
What's a grip safety? I know you all probably think I'm an idiot but I have no idea what one is.
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
See the button on the back of the grip. Its the grip safety it has to be pressed with a firm grip for the gun to function. It is mainly on 1911's but Springfield is famous for 1911's.

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Oh that's cool. I wouldn't mind having something like that. I know when I looked at several guns at a local place they didn't have safeties at all. At least I didn't see anything like that on them. Only had a heavy trigger pull and I didn't like that at all.
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
I held a springfield w/ the grip safety and didnt like the way it felt in my hand. seemed like i had to hold it way up on the gun to keep the grip lever in check.
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Another HUGE vote for the XD here. I have the XD9, and this is the best pistol i have ever shot. The design and reliability is second to none. In over 2500 rounds, i haven't had a single mis fire or mal function. I use some crappy ammo too for targets. This gun is by far one of the best there is for the price.
There is a forum specifically for XD pistols.. i forget the web address but you can find it by googling. Ask some questions there... the forums will give you everything you need to know. |
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
I have an SR9 ordered right now. I've been very pleased with the Rugers that I own. Their customer service is excellent and they are 100% American made. Springfields are great guns, but I decided to stick with Ruger.
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
I own and carry a SR-9 that has been sent back to the factory and had the trigger upgrade done to it. It is one fine shooting gun in all aspectsfor me. I have shot the XD's and I agree the 45acp might be a better all around defense load if they are accurate, but some are not. The other thing that comes to mind is your hand size the Ruger is narrower and lighterthan the XD's or the older Ruger P-89's. If you have smaller hands the Ruger SR-9 maybe be a better choice for you. Honesly either one is a fine example of workmanship. Good luck.

RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Heck rugermike,I like bigger grips, usually have to fit larger grips or choose 1 with larger grips to fit in my big paws.
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Another vote for the XD.
I now have 3 of them.....My original XD 40 Tactical has been thru ALOT and the only problems it has ever had was when my brothers wife was shooting it. It had some FTEs due to her limp wristing it. I just purchased a Sub Compact 9mm for $479.99, and with the promo I get another 2 mags for it for free. I also got a 4" service while I was at it in 9mm as well. |
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
Since I began reading gun forums on the net, I have found that some people are very sensitive when it comes to firearms. That being said, have you considered the Smith & Wesson M&P? I recently purchased a M&P 9L and I love the features and accessories it comes with. Three backstraps, case and two magazines. My wife, who never shot a pistol till recently, shot it several times and really likes it. It is not designed for concealed carry, but they do make a compact in several calibers. By the way, my son has a XD 9 and he and I both love it as well.
|
RE: Springfield XD or Ruger SR9???
I haven't handled or shot the Ruger, but I do love my XD9 Service Model. The M&P's seem to also be popular now, but I wonder if that's more because S&W already have such inroads into police community and not necessarily because it's a better platform than the XD.
|
I will bump this thread up, I am in the same boat.....XD or SR9.
I have always been a Ruger fan. I own several rifles and a MK 22/45. I really really like the feel of the SR9 but, I got my hands on a XD40 last week and liked it as well too. The .40 would be a better defense gun I think; harder hitting...the rounds of course a lil more $$. Decisions, Decisions.....I will get one of these in the next year. |
The only Ruger semi automatic handgun I would ever own is a .22 long rifle. I just don't like their semi autos at all. The XD is a great gun and I would go with that.
|
This is not even a fair fight !!! The XD's !! Let's at least pick something that's on a level playing field.
|
The local gun store here that caters to alot of police said they have trouble keeping the XD's in stock because the police buy them in a .45 for a back up gun at home.
|
one word, GLOCK
|
Glock is good too, but many, many folks find the grip angle and shape of the XD to be superior to that Glock. I was all set to buy a Glock before holding and shooting an XD. The grip angle and shape were much more comfortable for me. Also like the grip safety.
|
XD for sure. Mine has been rock solid reliable. Its a fantastic gun for the price. I would buy another in a heartbeat.
|
Another vote for the XD. I have the XD45c that I carry almost daily in my Crossbreed Supertuck. Solid design and eats anything I feed it. I like the way the XD fits my hand better than Glocks...but that's just a personal preference thing. Between the grip safety, trigger safety and striker block safety, the only way it can fire is to intentionally grip the pistol and pull the trigger. The best safety however for any firearm, as we all know, is the lump between our shoulders. No regrets with the XD!
|
XD(M) if your state laws allow.
Feel is VERY important, particularly with handguns. |
I think either one would be a good choice. I have shot my F-I-L's xd and it is a fantastic gun and really feels good when shooting it. But the SR9 feels good to me as well and points very naturally for me so that is what I have my eye on next.
