Hmm well I know I could make the shot. As I have been hunting since I was 8. Shooting squirrels and birds at tip tops of trees barely seen.

Yeah but a 300 yard shot is pretty tough... I'd say get a Tikka T3 Lite .243

14? I'd suggest a .243 made by Savage. Savage rifles are legendary for their accuracy, straight out of the box.

Also, you mention the terrain where you hunt. It's a good idea to match the rifle to the terrain where you hunt. You wouldn't want to bring a massive .338 Magnum witha 4-12 x 50AO scope into the heavy brush, briars and thickets. Just the same... You wouldn't want to bring an old open sighted .30-30 out into the open ridges and rolling fields, to take down a Mule Deer at 300 yards.

The .243 is perfect for overlooking a field edge where you can shoot 200 yards or more. It is a flat shooting cartridge with little to no recoil. Keep the shot right in the chest cavity, and you will have venison!

If you hunt in the deep woods, briars, and thick stuff, the timeless classic, historical, .30-30 shines here. I still have my old Marlin .30-30 and use it just for that purpose. It's real lightweight, easy to carry, and can come right up to the shoulder to crack off a shot in an instant. There's just something about an old lever gun with open sights. You're following in the footsteps of generations of hunters before you.

Now, besides my old Marlin .30-30, I also have a Savage in .308 with a nice Bushnell 3-9x40 scope, that I use for the pastures, field edges, up on the ridgetops, etc... I use the .308 everywhere that I don't use the old .30-30.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for stopping by and providing the information. I was thinking Savage also. My friend just got a .308 savage. I wanted to get a .308 but I know if I got that that's all i'd be getting for Christmas, because there more expensive then a .243. Alright so now I need to find my gun a .243 and i'll be looking at the Savage and Remington. What do you think about that?

I would also look at what Ruger has to offer. I have had quite a few of them and they have all been excellent rifles. As for the choice of caliber, that's up to you. I have shot many different cartridges and they all do fine if you know thier limitations. My personal favorite gun is a Ruger Frontier in .7mm-08 Rem. I have a 1.5-5 vari-x III scope on it with an illuminated reticle. Whenever I hunt Deer, this is the gun I reach for. After a few years, you will certainly try many guns and you too can choose your favorite. Good luck on your search and happy hunting!

Well I went to Gradys and looked at some guns. The one I really liked was the Rimington .308 . My dad suggested it also. So I think i'm leaning towards it. It was around 350 dollars with a scope on it. Not sure what type.
