RE: .223 for deer?
It will work fine for 50 yard shots. The only problem i could see you having is that the tiny bullet hole wont let too much blood out for tracking and could very easily blocked and not leave a blood trail if you do have to track the animal.

RE: .223 for deer?
I personally don't like a 22 cal for deer, but with the right bullet and an experienced hunter and marksman it will do the job. That being said I have a friend who's 9 year old was started on a 223 and has shot 2 deer with them and lost both because hehasn't hit them perfect. I am now getting ready to load up some 270 youth loads for him.

RE: .223 for deer?
the .223 will work just fine. it's an sccurate round that lend to easy heart/lung shots. with the right hollow point bullet that should be no problems killing a deer. afterall, a .223 use used to kill people, why wouldn't it work on deer?

RE: .223 for deer?
I have seen plenty of deer killed with a regular old .22LR out to about 50-60 yds. I don't know why people think you need a cannon to kill a deer. If you use a decent expanding bullet there easy to kill. Just make sure she's comfortable with the gun, can make a decent shot, and she will have no problem at all.

RE: .223 for deer?
A .223 will kill as well as anything else if you hit the deer properly. Maybe even better than a larger gun since your wife will probably tolerate shooting and practicing more with it than she would with a hard hitting round. Ammo is cheap, so that is a bonus too. Just stay away from the fmj loads for hunting.

RE: .223 for deer?
Although I personally don't like the .22 cal bullets for deer, I have heard of deer being taken with them. A good friend of mine knows an older man who is the "camp cook" where they hunt. Old man sits at the camp watching a food plot located about 200 yards behind the camp and takes shoulder shots when he sees a deer that he wants. While he may have to take a second shot to finish them off, he claims he has never had to track one. They always DRT. I don't know. He said, he said... if you know what I mean. I would always stick with a minimum .243 win for deer. Especially in Minn where your deer are so big

RE: .223 for deer?
Use a heavy grain bullet at least 75 or more in hollow points. Hornady and Black Hills both make them. A friend of mine uses a mini-14 to hunt deer and hogs and has no problems. Aim steady and hit the vitals well. You will be fine!!!!

RE: .223 for deer?
.223 would not be my first choice, there is no room for error. Most the bullets are made for varmits. I have a 22-250 that I use for varmit hunting, but never use deer hunting.

RE: .223 for deer?
ORIGINAL: gregrn43 .223 would not be my first choice, there is no room for error. I absolutely despise that comment, "room for error " Theres no room for error using any caliber, period. People keep saying this and new hunters will think if they get a big gun they can just aim at brown. Just this weekend at 2 different deer camps all friends of mine, one rookie hit a deer in the gut with a .270, my friend had to help track and was just apauled by what he witnessed, a deer that kept being pushed with it guts strung out all on the ground and getting tangled on limbs and being yanked out. It was finally put out of its misery. Another friend personally made a bad shot on a deer with a .308, again guts were strung out, deer was pushed onto neigboring property where they were denied acces to to try and recover. This deer was quartering too and no matter what he says he did, I guarantee he aimed behind the shoulder, which is a gut shot on a quartering too deer. Please people, quit saying room for error, theres no room for error with any caliber you choose. |
RE: .223 for deer?
In New Hampshire nothing below a .30 cal. is allowed to hunt deer.
So why did the U.S. Government allow a .223 to kill our enemies ?? We should have kept the M-14 (.308 win.) I could hit a bulls eye at 500 yds any day ! (with Marine Corps training of course ! ) It's like trying to compare a 9mm to a .45, you can't !!!!!!!Sometimes bigger is better !!!!! |
