Buying First Gun...Help
So I am buying my first gun and I am having a problem deciding exactly what gun I want. I want something that is going to outlast me. I will be using it primarily for whitetail and hogs. I'm looking at the new browning x-bolt, but I'm unsure of the gun because it just came out. I kinda want a classic. Help.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
For a classic go with a Remington 700 or you could getan actual classic and get one from around 1970's.
|
RE: Buying First Gun...Help
What is your price range? I f you want a classic that will deffenetaly out live you try a Weatherby, but the Remington 700 and Browning A-Bolt are true classic that will last a lifetime.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Winchester Model 70, about as classic as you can get. Well I take that back, MAUSER, the original bolt gun. Remington has the 798 and 799. CZ is suposed to be good too and they are also Mausers.
Have you decided on a caliber yet? |

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
I love my Tikka but tis not really a classic like you want. It fits me great though.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Take a look at the Howa. For the money I don't think there's a better deal out there. Got one on my wish list right now.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Key to longevity is to maintain the gun properly. If you take care of it any gun will last a lifetime or more.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
My vote is for browning a-bolt. I currently have 2 and am fixin to get another.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Remington 700, chambered for .243 Win. Excellent choice for a first rifle, and plenty of punch for your intended prey.
|
RE: Buying First Gun...Help
You want a classic?? Buy one of the new Winchester Model 70's in .308 Win. or .30/'06. Or, if money is no object. buy a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in either of those two calibers, or in .270.
The Model 70 of the pre-64 design is still known in America as the Rifleman's Rifle. It will always be so. |
RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Savage in 243 or 7mm08

I do not know what your budget is but if you can go for it get a Cooper To me they are the best, And you can ask anyone on here, and if they no their guns they will tell you there is not much better than a Copper you get what you pay for.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
You are absolutly right about cooper. They are same as my old kimber of oregon-in fact, think they're run by old kimber people.

RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Yes Cooper is run by Dan Cooper and two other former employees of Kimber of Oregon Founded Cooper Firearms, INC in 1990 |
RE: Buying First Gun...Help
Thanks for the help guys. I went and looked at a few different guns today. Im looking at the 30-06 caliber. In the price range between $500-$700. The guy at the shop really pushed the Remington 700 synthetic stock, but I kinda want a wooden stock. The 700 wooden is a bit more expensive, and does not have a floated barrel. He really shut me down on the Browning, but I kinda like the A-bolt. I am now being swayed towards the CZ 550. Gonna go hold some more tomorrow. Let me know if yall have any more ideas. This is probably the hardest thing that I have ever done.

And as for the CZ 550 not bad but I would take a look at a Tikka to me it is just better than the CZ. |

We've all got suggestions for you, but you're the only one who's going to be shooting it. Don't decide on a brand/model just because we tell you to: shoulder 'em all for yourself, & you be the judge. Alright fellas. I just got back from my visit to the store and I have narrowed my decision down. I am no longer looking at the x-bolt because it just didn't feel right. I got to hold the CZ Model 3 I believe, because they did not have the 550 in stock. I would really like to get a hold of this gun to see if i like it as much as the Model 3. I also really liked the Remington 700, and the Browning A-bolt. So now ive got it narrowed down to three guns. Was gonna go to another store later on today but have decided to go bowhunting instead. Ill keep yall posted.

Get something with a Mauser action. Remington 798
|
RE: Buying First Gun...Help
I have a Browning Abolt stainless stalker and I get a little teary when I think about that gun.3/4's of an inch all day long with factory ammo.It has the CR Boss attachment on it.
I wouldn't take double for what I have in this gun, that is as much an endorsement as I can give. |
