NEW .17 HMR

I have been looking at buying a new .17HMR. I was looking at the Ruger, and I also looked at a Sako (which is big bucks). I was wondering if anyone has a Ruger and how it shoots. Also how is this overall caliber. I thought I might buy one just to shoot with at the range and to do some ground hog hunting with. Are they worth the money or should I just save my wifes money. LOL

I own a marlin .17 and absolutely love it. Knockin down dogs at 100-200 yrds is too much fun. Unless you need to have the fancy stocks and high end names, for 1/2 the $ or less you can pick up a Marlin or Savage that will shoot just as good.

Save some money and get a Marlin and put a good Timney trigger in it.

A Marlin 917V is hard to beat.

I owned a marlin when they first came out.The accuracy was great, less than a 1/2 inch at a hundred yards. This would be an excellent groundhog gun for closer ranges to 175yards or so,but you will have a few runners if you cant hit them in the head,as far as the ruger goes I'm sure that it would be a great rifle the 77/22 is an awesome gun,as someone else said CZ,I have a CZ 452 american and this is hands down the best made 22 rifle I have owned,I have a 9 and1/2 oz trigger and this gun will outshoot my rem.541T and at $300 new it would be impossible to find a ruger for that price in 17hmr.Marlin,savage, and CZ make a great 17hmr gun for half the price of the ruger or sako guns that will shoot just as well, the CZ will be very comparable too the ruger but a little less expensive.I dont know about kimber or anschultz, but if the sako and ruger are expensive then you best stay away from these!I would love to own a kimber but I won't give what they wan't for one.

Another vote for the Savage 93 here. Very accurate rifle with the accu trigger. I say save the money on a rifle and spend it on good glass to see those tiny little holes out to 100 yards. I haven't shot a ground hog with mine yet, but it is really too much for the tree rats. (unless you head shoot them)

Funny, i keep seeing folks say that the .17 isn't good for squirrels. I prefer to take head shots, but have taken several with shots thru the shoulder.Except for losing a couple square inches of rib meat, there has not been a problem. Most of the good meat on a squirrel is the hindlegs and lower back, so you have a lot of room for error even if you are shooting them with a centerfire.
