The .308 in 150 grain will penetrate the front side shoulder or ribs and will be under the hide on the back side with a corelokt bullet, thus transfereing the energy into the deer.
The original post references shots of 100yds and under, at that range a 308 with a 150gr bulletwill exit the off side.

Shot placement is the most important issue to quickly putting a deer down. However, most deer will still run a short distance.

Anything from the 250 Savge on up will do fine. I shoot a 308 most of the time for deer. My all time favorites are the 250 Savage, 6.5x55, 270 and 308. I have used at least a dozen other calibers as well but these are the ones I go to most.

Go with a 308 but use good bullets like Barnes Triple-Shock X Bullets.

But if you would like to have morefoot pounds of energygo with a Mag like a 270 wsm or 300wsm or 7mm rem mag.

But if you dont like a mag My all time best is a 270 win.
I agree with everything this gentleman has stated, except thatpremium bullets are needed for deer shooting. They are NOT. But it is hard to beat the .270 Winchester round!!

I have killed many deer with my rem.788 in 308 and have never had to track them more than a few yards.Just bust those shoulders and they aint going far, they may try to scoot away using their hind legs but most will not move due to the shock to the spine transfered from the shoulders.I also have had the same results with the 30-06,6.5X55,243 and others.Good shot placement is more important than caliber the 30-30 has long been a favorite of many woods hunters and will continue to kill many deer at reasonable ranges for the cartridge and will drop them in their tracks with a good shot.Good hunting!

I have a Remington 7600 pump in 7mm-08 and it is a great gun. If you are looking for a gun that has great accuracy and a whole lot less recoil then the 7mm-08 is for you. It's all about shot placement not the caliber. Doesn't matter if you are shooting a 22-250 or a.338 if you don't hit em in the engine room then plan on chasing them.

The 7600 pump is a great gun especially if you are left handed. My buddy just picked up a TC Pro Hunter and I shot that this weekend. His is also 7mm-08. That gun has less recoil then my 7600 pump. I also have a marlin 30as in 30-30 and if PA is like upstate NY and your hunting woods/tall ridgesthen you probably arent getting over a 60-75 yard shot right? I have dumped more deer with my 30-30 than I can shake a stick at. The 30-30 is a great gun for a 25-100 yard shot. If I had it to do over again I would go with a 35Rem, a nice lever action scope and some Hornady leverlution in 35Rem. To me that would make a great 0-100 yard gun.

I prefer the .308 over the 30-06 and they ARE NOT exactly the same, even though some have posted such...take the cartridges and place them next to each other, the 30-06 has more gun powder but the .308 shoots at a less of an arch and in more planed....the 30-06 arches more and, in my experience less accurate...go with the .308

Please explain how the .308 Winchester "arches" less than the .30-06. Everything I have personally seen and read points to the opposite. Just look at factory ballistic tables and you will see that when identical bullets are used, the .30-06 drops less.

Honestly i would have to say that the 30-06 would be the best deer gun if you are looking for so called "knock-down power".There really is no such thing as knock-down power as much as velocity and how much the round mushrooms on impact. But the 30-06 has treated me well.
