25-06 would be better for the non handloader Quilly. 257 needs to be handloaded to get out its fullest potential.

no question here. I own a 257 R The factory ammo, when you can find it, is severly loaded down because of the old lever actions still out there. Reloading is necessary for this cal.

The .257 Roberts, while being one of the all-time great deer cartridges, is pretty underloaded by the factories in deference to the old rifles chambered for it. If you handload, however, carrying one around during deer season would definitely make you one of the coolest dudes in the woods. [8D]

I wonder how the .243 WSSM will shake out against the 25-.06?

I have found Hornady 117 gr Customs from Cabelas aroung $17 a box. It' s loaded to a more respectable level, for the little critters, I handload 75 gr hp' s with 48.0 gr of H380, which is the max load and have gotten sub moa grps. I bought my 257 simply to be different and have a midrange deer/varmint gun.

The 25-06 is a awesome caliber especially when matched with a 115gr or 117 gr bullet.Never had much dealings with the 257 roberts but have always wanted a 257 weatherby.

Picking between those two is like picking between miss September and miss October. For the non loader though I would have to say the 25-06. The new 243 short mag will most likely outrace the 257 Roberts and equal the 25-06 velocity wise. The 25' s will always have the advantage of the bigger hevier bullet.
