Have you ever...
popped yourself in the head with a scope??? LOL the first time I shot a 35 it happened. Uhhh quite embarrassing but nobody knew until I said "Oh gosh dern it, I hit my head"
![]() This was 3 or so weeks ago and its still a bit tender. Right between the dang eyes. Man, I tell you I had a nasty headache the rest of the day. |
RE: Have you ever...
Done it one time, many years ago. Had a Winchester 30-30 that had a side mount scope, after shooting for a while with the scope I swithed to open sights and got to close to the scope. Busted my head open, I dropped the gun. Bled like a stuck hog, probably should have had a few stitches, still got the scar.

RE: Have you ever...
Here is a picture right before it happened. Notice how close my head it... it seemed far away at the time!!!
Lets not discuss how I stand either. Ive been shunned enough ![]() ![]() |

RE: Have you ever...
Never done it but took my brother -in-law in for stitches . He crowded in close to keep the sun out of his eyes ,never thought about the scope .

RE: Have you ever...
That stock is too long for you. You are too far up on the stock. I am not sure but that rifle looks like a Marlin 336. If so you can get a butt stock on E-Bay for $30 or $40. Buy one and cut it off.
I have busted my "Noggin" many times. If you shoot a lot it will happen. This is the reason I am going to send my Encore off and have it ported. The rifle has too much muzzle flip. Tom. |
RE: Have you ever...
Only did this once with a .45-70 with handloads. Just kissed my skull is how I like to put it.
Tom |
RE: Have you ever...
I've done it twice. The first time was when I shot my first buck. I had blood steaming down my face and had to wipe it out of my eye for a follow up shot. My father was watching me from his stand with binoculars and at the shothe said it looked liked somebody shot me between the eyes. The second time was at the range during an all day session and I got lazy. That was embarrassing. That 7mm will bite you if you give it a chance.
|
RE: Have you ever...
My 13 year old son did it just last year antelope hunting. He had a choice of several rifles to use and picked the .300 Win mag which he had never shot before. At the shot the buck dropped in his tracks and I was watching thru the binos. What I didn't realize at the time was the scope had clocked the boy in the head....right between the eyes, on the bridge of his glasses. Nasty looking wound. Apparently several years of shooting prairie dogs with much lighter kicking rifles had made him a bit complacent about how he held the rifle. He learned quickly from that point on to respect that gun.

RE: Have you ever...
Did it once realgoodabout 3 years ago sighting in a 300 win mag on a bench that was way too low for me. Popped me right between the eyes and sliced me open good.
I bled for about 2 hours. The bad thing is...... I was with the head gunsmith sighting in these rifles and he looked up at me, busted out laughing, and then immediately pulled out the cell phoneto call the store to let every one know what had happened. |
RE: Have you ever...
I was lucky it didnt break the skin. It was only one side of the scope that got me. I should stop my whining, your stories are worse :D

RE: Have you ever...
It happened to once while on a Canadian deer hunt. I shot a buck while slightly out of position with a Kimber 300 WSM just before dark ine evening. I didnt feel or notice anything at the shot BTW.
I hurried and got my stuff together and went to the downed deer and took several field photos via a camera/tripod/self timer. I waited another 30 minutes until the outfitter and my best friend showed up. They no sooner got out of the truck and started laughing their butts off, I stood there and asked "What, what's so funny?" Then Fred asked me, "why do have blood running down your nose"? I said "what blood, are you kidding me?" "Look, look into a the mirror at yourself" they said. It wasnt until that moment that I realized that I got "scoped" and I had all those pictures of myself and with the excitement of the moment didnt notice the blood. Long story , short....when I got back home, I had to photoshop the blood running down my nose in the pictures and until this day Fred reminds me of that day. |

Are you saying your Marlin is a model 35. Or the caliber is 35 caliber. It will say on your barrel what the model, and cartridge are. I looks like a model 336. Possibly a 35 Remington cartridge?? If so then that rifle will kick a little. You really do need a stock that would fit you. Or you are definitely gonna get hit in the eye again. And normally a scope will bring the blood. Tom. |

RE: Have you ever...
I know you didn't want comments about your form, but if it was better that might not have happened. You should be leaning more forward than back. You should stand straight up, center your balance over your legs, bend your knees a bit then stick your butt out a little. Then place the stock into your shoulder, pulling it in and lean into the shot a little. Looks a bit goofy, but it will help with recoil and shot recovery. It's easier to show you than to try and explain.
Your really don't look that close to scope to me to be honest. My honest suggestion would be to find some place to take a few shooting lessons, you will be happy with the results I promise. Gun fit is important as well, especially when shooting off hand like that. As far as the rest of your form goes, well... someones a lucky guy that's all I can say without getting into trouble;). RE: Have you ever...
That form comes from a too heavy Rifle..........

I am sorry. I proof read my post and thought it might come across as harsh. The problem is I really like taking my girl friend shooting and hunting with me. We have a blast together. She got bit once also. But then I bought a rifle that fit her perfectly. And now if you are within 100 yards of her(off hand shooting), you are in a world of hurt. Her cartridge of choice is a 30 Carbine. She has two of them now. She has also claimed a new Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum I just bought. She is as addicted as I am. Tom. |
RE: Have you ever...
Rifle loony... your silly :D
On my form... the reason I lean back is because it feel more "comfortable" to me. Ive tried the standing forward and stuff but honestly, i cant STAND the feeling of my butt pokin out. That is the most annoying thing!!! Head0001... you werent a bit harsh, i was just playin with ya. ![]() |
RE: Have you ever...
It looks like you have a couple of 4-wheelers in the background?? Ain't it a hoot to get out and ride and shoot?? We do it all the time. I have a Kawasaki Mule that I had modified. We grab three or four hundred rounds and take off for the afternoon. I am older so I drink Pepsi instead of Budweiser. But she drinks a few Buds(I am the driver). I really enjoy watching the ladies shoot(especially her and my best friend's daughter). If someone helps a lady shoot with the properly fitting firearm, the ladies get hooked real fast. And ladies seem to be more steady when it comes to off hand shooting. Good Luck, Tom.

RE: Have you ever...
Not my 4 wheelers. A buds down at camp. They are fun. My mother was down with us and she was riding my daughter around... well as soon as she put it in "reverse" my daughter thought "hey..... I wanna go FAST!". Almost hit me and almost backed into a dern tree. It was so scary watching that but geez I couldnt stop laughing. I thought my mother had done chit in her pants.

RE: Have you ever...
I know it feels weird, but you need to do it until you get used to it. It is just like shooting a bow, anytime you change anything it feels odd, doesn't mean it is wrong though. You are just not used to it. Rifles need proper form as well, it's just as critical. If you would stick with doing it the correct way you would find after a while you won't get tired as quickly and you will shoot better. Not to mention being that far off balance the recoil will really effect you. I wouldn't be surprised if after the shot you have to actually take a step backwards to keep your balance. Am I right on that?
To answer your question though, yes I have been smacked in the head before. Normally when shooting something with a lot of recoil and using a high powered scope turned all the way up off from bench. The higher power makes eye relief more critical and when shooting from a bench I tend to creep up on the scope sometimes. I have done it with a 30-06 when I was younger and again with my slug gun a few years ago. I am very little, so that doesn't help either. I only weighed about 85-90 lbs when I had the 30-06. Paul |

Hey cupcake....its great form....for a smaller rifle like you have...have fun with it:)....We need to get you into a 12 gauge Turkey Load 3 1/2 inchbullet and let you give it a go. Needless to say. Very impressive! I have enjoyed reading the conversations about your first forehead experience...

RE: Have you ever...
So who has the date with her, I'm gettin confused.......;)
Anyway - I've never gave myself "magnum eye" but I have seen a few of my buddies do it to themselves. One of my buddies did it about 3 years ago when he shot his first buck with a rifle out of my box blind, funny thing was I was laughing at him and he didn't know why. He's like whats so funny, the deer is dead, I'm like your bleeding, then he realized he had blood running down his face! lol |

Im lucky i didnt have blood, but it makes me respect the firearm more, not that i didnt already but hell... its not getting a second round with me:D

RE: Have you ever...
cupcake,
We call that "scope eye" here. I let my wife shoot my 35 Whelen with some souped up hand loads and the reaction after the first shot was not good. This was about 4 years ago and the story gets better every time she tells it. She didn't get scope eye but thought her shoulder popped out of place. LOL |
RE: Have you ever...
I haven't but was hunting with pops one time, after he took a few shots, he turned around and I saw the blood. That was pretty funny.
