I don't know what you thought you heard, but it was not the bullet hitting the target. At those distances the bullet is still traveling 3 times to twice the speed of sound. The bullet is in the target before you are done hearing the muzzle blast of the gun. I highly doubt you can hear the bullet moving down the barrel of a slug gun either. Paul |

Well, I guess its possible. Can't say I have ever heard it. Time of flight of a moderateslug is between .2 and .3 seconds to 150 yards. Speed of sound is around 1150fps depending on humidity and temp and pressure. So a 150yard is 450ft, so it would take .39seconds for the sound to reach you, so it would take ~0.7sec after pulling the trigger for you to hear anything. I just can't imagine hitting a deer or whatever would make enough noise to actually hear it 150 yards away.

Look at the post above yours Wiggy. .243 at a yote 40 yards away and heard the bullet hit. I just can't buy that one. Maybe with something big and slow, but not a .243.

i can usually call my 200+yd groundhog hits with the 22-250...usually call most of the hits past 250 or so...unmistakible thud opposed to what a miss sounds like:D
i THINK i can hear many bullets rip through targets...usually just carboard and paper... never seen a vapor trail...that would be awesome though! |

Ive never seen a vapor trail but would love to. I know my dad and my boss have. They were both out shooting one day when i was alot younger and had it happen a few times for them.
