as HTN said in hes story, at close range they explode like a varmint bullet and the enter and exit holes are the same size, they shed their jackets and loose a ton of weight. the longer the shot the less distructive the bullets is, the less it explodes. i used the shockwave last year in my muzzleloader and was not happy at all. i shot a doe at 20ft through the low chest, she was alive an hour and half later when i found her 75yds from my tree.

I have put deer down at 190 yards with Hornady SST's out of my H&R Ultra Slug. I swear by the SST's....I would choose the Federal Barnes as a second choice and Winchesters as a 3rd. (But they're all great!)

If you are not concerned about weight and your shots are with in 120 yards - I'd go with the heavy, accurate, LIGHTFIELDS.

Attached is a group from my SST's at 100 yards with my H&R.

how do you lightfields group at 100? i've never gotten 3 shots in a row from a sst, plat tip, part gold, barnes/federal, core lok, coppersolid to group like that. if you gave me 2 boxes i could do it. now with lightfields, I'd ahve all three of those holes touching each other.

dad shot a buck at 40-50yds, kept shooting, thought he missed etc....I think about 5 slugs went into him.

Not sure if he was dead and didn't konw it or what the case was, perhaps too close?

He took a doe at about 100yds with I think federal barnes expanders and dropped like a ton of bricks, smaller animal than that buck, but did have us wondering what the deal was?

Jury is still out in my mind....

I have 2 H&Rs 20 & 12 gauge......And all my friends have them.

What I have learned is that (all) of them will like at least (1) member of the high velocity group....sst, plat tip, part gold, barnes/federal, core lok, coppersolid... No doubt...The 1900 fps - 2000 bullets are not as tight but when you find the one you like your gun will be solid out to 200 with a range finder....

On the flip side...I have learned that ALL H&R's love the Lightfields...they are deadly....We only choose the high velocity stuff because we're shooting out into plowed dirt during gun season which offers long shots.

Great talking to you!

I shot an 8 point at 168 yards with the SST's and it dropped hard...

Federal Barnes have been my #1 choice for quite some time...Taken alot of deer with them.

the only reason I switched to the 300 gr. SST is because the trad. at 200 yards was a 5.5 inch drop rather than a 9 inch drop from the Federal....just more consistency out passed 160 yards.

I know this is not needed but I wanted this flatter trad. out to long range if I was forced to take that shot...I only take shots out to 200 if I'm in NO wind and I have my Nikon range finder by my side...anda solid rest ..usually out the window of my hunting shack.

I dont know but my 20 tracker 2 hates lightfields i could barely keep them on the target (with iron sights) first shot with my stt's ahalf an inch from the center:D(iron sights too) and that was i think around the 50-75 range, which would put like an inch low at 100 like 3-4 at 150 so aim alittle high, but i will have to see how they do with a scope after gun season.
