Hornady SSt's
hey i have shot the sst's out of my slug gun, now i have heard that sometimes the slugs dont have knock down power to kill the deer???? is that true, my cousins said they were good slugs, but i wanted to know what you guys think.
thanks |
RE: Hornady SSt's
Shot placement is a premium regardless of bullet, as is working inside the limits of the chambering.
Old rules of thumb... The SST's are good stuff.......... |
RE: Hornady SSt's
^thanks i just need some reasurrance

RE: Hornady SSt's
My son shot a doe at about 130 yards last fall, she went about 40 yards. Shot placement makes any bullet work.

RE: Hornady SSt's
Used my 870 with SSTs two seasons ago for deer. Shot a 200 pound doe right through the heart at 110 yards. She went 30 yards, massive blood trail, complete slug pass through, no blow out.
Shot a buck about the same size a week later at about 30 yards. Complete pass through at the shoulders. No blow out. Exit holes were about the same size as the entrance holes on both deer. Seems like these slug have more than enough power, and hold together well. |
RE: Hornady SSt's
Often wondered if the SST is the same as the T/C Shockwave, since the two makers are in cahoots.....
Been told they are same/same by unofficial sources, fwitw...... |
RE: Hornady SSt's
The SST and the T/C Shockwaves are the same when it comes down to muzzleloader sabots, Hornady makes them for T/C who then places a new name on them, and sells them under there name.
As far as the SST shotgun slugs, I use them in my H&R 20ga., excellent results. I shot a buck last year here in NJ, about 80 yards, the only shot I had is where the neck meets the body, one shot and he dropped in his tracks, so I would say they are just fine, and like others have stated shot placement is key |
RE: Hornady SSt's
I cut open a 20 guage SST to check out the bullet. Its the same as the SSTs for muzzleloader & yes it is the same as the shock wave. Its a .45 cal bullet. Its a great choice if your gun groups them OK

RE: Hornady SSt's
thanks for all the advice, guys, and yes i they are the same as the shockwave. thanks for reasurring me.
|
RE: Hornady SSt's
Good thing is that they seem to be cheaper than a lot of the shotgun sabot slugs out there. At least that's what I am finding.
|
RE: Hornady SSt's
as HTN said in hes story, at close range they explode like a varmint bullet and the enter and exit holes are the same size, they shed their jackets and loose a ton of weight. the longer the shot the less distructive the bullets is, the less it explodes. i used the shockwave last year in my muzzleloader and was not happy at all. i shot a doe at 20ft through the low chest, she was alive an hour and half later when i found her 75yds from my tree.

RE: Hornady SSt's
I have put deer down at 190 yards with Hornady SST's out of my H&R Ultra Slug. I swear by the SST's....I would choose the Federal Barnes as a second choice and Winchesters as a 3rd. (But they're all great!)
If you are not concerned about weight and your shots are with in 120 yards - I'd go with the heavy, accurate, LIGHTFIELDS. Attached is a group from my SST's at 100 yards with my H&R. ![]() |
RE: Hornady SSt's
how do you lightfields group at 100? i've never gotten 3 shots in a row from a sst, plat tip, part gold, barnes/federal, core lok, coppersolid to group like that. if you gave me 2 boxes i could do it. now with lightfields, I'd ahve all three of those holes touching each other.

RE: Hornady SSt's
dad shot a buck at 40-50yds, kept shooting, thought he missed etc....I think about 5 slugs went into him.
Not sure if he was dead and didn't konw it or what the case was, perhaps too close? He took a doe at about 100yds with I think federal barnes expanders and dropped like a ton of bricks, smaller animal than that buck, but did have us wondering what the deal was? Jury is still out in my mind.... |
RE: Hornady SSt's
I have 2 H&Rs 20 & 12 gauge......And all my friends have them.
What I have learned is that (all) of them will like at least (1) member of the high velocity group....sst, plat tip, part gold, barnes/federal, core lok, coppersolid... No doubt...The 1900 fps - 2000 bullets are not as tight but when you find the one you like your gun will be solid out to 200 with a range finder.... On the flip side...I have learned that ALL H&R's love the Lightfields...they are deadly....We only choose the high velocity stuff because we're shooting out into plowed dirt during gun season which offers long shots. Great talking to you! |
RE: Hornady SSt's
I shot an 8 point at 168 yards with the SST's and it dropped hard...
Federal Barnes have been my #1 choice for quite some time...Taken alot of deer with them. the only reason I switched to the 300 gr. SST is because the trad. at 200 yards was a 5.5 inch drop rather than a 9 inch drop from the Federal....just more consistency out passed 160 yards. I know this is not needed but I wanted this flatter trad. out to long range if I was forced to take that shot...I only take shots out to 200 if I'm in NO wind and I have my Nikon range finder by my side...anda solid rest ..usually out the window of my hunting shack. |
