RE: Mossberg 500 or 835 vs Remington 870

I have an 835 and don't know that I would say that a Moss is better than a Rem. When I decided between the two it really came down to erognomics. I really like where Moss put the safety and slide release. Other than that I consider them equal.

Helen Keller wouldhave taken an 870 over any Mossberg made
LOL!! :D

Also, I think there is some kind of law somewhere, where every gun safe has to have an 870 in it. ;)

RE: Mossberg 500 or 835 vs Remington 870

I own a 500 and multiple 870s.

If I could have the feel and smoothness of an 870 with the action locklocation of a Mossy (behind the trigger guard)and the safety location of a Mossy (top of tang) or Winchester (crossbolt on front of trigger guard), I'd sell them all and replace them with THAT gun.

With that said, I've wagered the protection of my family on both models, and have had good experiences in the field with both.

I find that, to most folks, it comes down to 'feel', control positions, or loyalty to a given brand name. I don't think TOO much seperates them in quality or reliability.

I had an 870 matt finish, it was rust magnet. I used it as an anchor.

I'm partial to the 870 and here's why: take apart the 500. Lots of pieces parts. Take apart the 870. You have a bolt, a bolt plate (prob'ly not the technical term), and a trigger group (which you're probably not going to disassemble). Simplicity. Not only is it easier to take apart for maintenance, but fewer parts means fewer things to break or go wrong. That's my rationale.

I'm a Remington man, always will be. I have the 870 SPS-T super mag and it is one deadly setup. I'll never buy another turkey gun as long as I live, it does the job. Of course shot size andchokes make a difference, but I've tried 3 or 4 different chokes and they all pattern very well. Check the turkey hunting forum, Shotgun thread, you'll see a picture of a headless turkey, thanks to the 870.

I love Mossberg to death and i wanteed to see what others thought...because when my friends and i get into arguments about it i wana back it u with facts or opinions, so hit me with em
I have both. Prefer the 870, just fits me better. My opinion is both are quality guns for the money and have been around forever. Parts are plentiful and breakdown for both is easy. Not worth argueing about, really.End the arguement the best way just out shoot your friends

My dads old mossberg 500 has terrible iron signts compared to my uncles 870.
Mossberg iron sights are the best things around, i dont think i have any mossbergs made after 2000 but i can vouch for the awesomeness of the sights and how much better they are than conventional V shaped ones

I am pretty biased growing up just a few miles from the Remington Ilion factory, i even wrote my senior paper in college about Remington Arms. That being said i think the 870 has it all over the Mossberg pumps and every other pump out there. There is a reason they have sold 8 million of them, or whatever it is now, it is the pump that all others are measured against and it is just as effective now as when they came out with it. Also you can get them in a million different configurations and they are tough as nails. Like I said I'm biased, I grew up shooting remington so when i hold anything else it just "feels" wrong. But to each his own, if shooting a piece of crap mossberg makes you happy, more power to you...haha just kidding!
